The EDL are to hold a gathering in Luton today, in the Park Street and Church Street area of Luton.

Luton is, of cos, the hometown of the EDL's scumbag leader, Tommy Robinson.

United Against Fascism plan to pose a counter-demonstration in another part of the town.

There are going to be about 1000-1500 police on duty.

I have a question for my English comrades. Why does the government recognize this as a legitimate political organization? The base of their party is bigotry, why do they sanction this?

I feel kind of ashamed that these idiots are from my home town and started as a Luton Town supporters' faction.

Sorry to seem like a nuisance. But have people questioned their legitimacy? Sorry, I'm not too familiar with the political structure and laws there.

The majority of people don't attribute any legitimacy to them and will take the side (if they take one at all) of UAF in any confrontation that may arise. What is worrying is the the size of the minority that at least half agrees with them. By the majority of the politically unengaged populace, they're probably viewed in largely the same was as communists - a little lunatic fringe (although maybe more of a threat than us commies). I'm not really the most knowledgeable on this matter.

Groups like the EDL, the BFP, the BNP etc, are tolerated, cos the bosses can have a use for them, if and when necessary.

The NSDAP in Germany, was used to attack workers, and tackle the rise of Communism and working-class militancy. Likewise, in the UK, Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists (BUF) was deployed in a similar direction.

There is a good account of the role of the fash, and their anti-worker use, in Phil Piratin's book Our Flag Stays Red. Here there is a good illustration of the bosses giving the green light to Mosley (the Home Secretary granting approval for a highy provactive BUF march through Jewish neighbourhoods, despite widespread calls for it to be disallowed, for example). And also how the Police supported the fash (including coppers attacking a counter-demo of Jewish war veterans, and tearing up their British Legion Banner - odd for a 'patriotic' police force lol).

The ineptitude and spineless stance of Labour is also highlighted. They called for the anti-fascists and workers to 'stay away' from the opposition to the BUF.

Thank fuck for the leftists like Piratin and others - and the mobilization of the workers on that day. It became known as the Battle of Cable Street (1936). It was said that the fash 'will not pass'. And they didn't. Mosley went away with his tail between his legs.

I feel I should point out that the EDL aren't actually a party as such. They don't put candidates for elections or anything. I think this is because political parties are more tightly regulated than bands of street thugs. For example, they'd have to have an official membership list and submit accounts, but the EDL leadership likes to be able to claim a large membership based on their Facebook page size, then deny that certain people are in the EDL when they do something embarassing because "anyone can go on Facebook and do anything, you can't take that as evidence." The number of times Stephen Lennon (their leader) has gone on record as saying "[person] is not a member of the EDL" when actually they are is quite astounding.

They announced an alliance with the British Freedom Party the other day so they'll be standing candidates through them. Lets just say the announcement didn't go too well

If you're looking for more information about the EDL, this website chronicles their ongoing failures and idiocy in a fairly amusing way. It's not written from a revolutionary socialist standpoint, but it's pretty good all the same:

Edit: Just noticed Manic Impressive link to the same site. Never Mind.
