16 HIV-positive sex workers are jailed and pilloried by the Greek state and mainstream media, as discourse in the country takes a purely Nazi turn
In a stunning move toward an openly sexist and nazi-like discourse, the Greek ministry of health along with workers from KEELPNO (the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention) have been storming prostitution houses across Athens, examining and arresting sex workers inside. Astonishingly, the pretext for the raids was to protect (in the words of the minister of health himself) ‘Greek households’, in a pre-election trick that swaps around the roles of victim with that of the perpetrator.
So far, a three-day operation has seen 16 sex workers (all female) publicly identified as HIV-positive, with their photographs and full biographical details distributed on the police website and across mainstream media. All 16 have been charged with serious bodily harm, intended serious bodily harm and violation of the country’s prostitution law.
