Damn man this shit really affected me. When I heard them announce it on the radio yesterday, I had to take a minute to get myself together. More than any other artist or famous person that's died in my lifetime that I can remember, this one hit hard. I imagine it felt to me like what it felt like when big or pac died to a lot of people.
The beastie boys were so important musically because they brought the punk rock DIY aesthetic into hip hop. And you think Odd Future or Lil B are controversial? How many congressional hearings have they caused so far. The Beastie Boys paved the way for that shit.
They were incredibly important in my life as well. I remember around 6th or 7th grade my mom had just gotten a computer. I overheard some random dude at the store say something about the Beastie Boys, and for some reason the name just stuck with me and I went and googled them and downloaded every song I could off limewire or whatever we used back then. For some reason, the music just like spoke to me, as cheesy as that sounds, and it sparked my interest in finding music other than what kids on the block were listening to. And hell, punk sparked my interest in radical politics so it comes full circle. For me, MCA will forever live on.

Yes. It's really awful that you don't know who The Beastie Boys are.

Woah! Discovering the Beasties through Google and listening to them for the first time through downloads. Man, do I feel old today.
There's a music video from "The In Sound" where the three MCs are dressed as old men playing basketball. It's not my favorite of their songs or videos, but I thought it would be appropriate. I wanted to post that, but I couldn't find it, so I'll post this instead:

For a very specific age-group, they were like the Beatles. Maybe not the originators of trends, but a synthesis of what people when I was in high school were drawn to in either hip-hop and punk. For suburban slackers, stoners, skaters, punks, and hip-hop heads, they were common ground.

^I only said that about feeling old because the first beastie boys album I had was on tape - right next to my Cypress Hill and Niggas4life tapes - lol. And Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Nirvana.:)
