I am greatly torn over this. What if a guy says, 'as long as I am not hurting anyone, why can't I have negative stereotypes?'

Thing is, ideas become actions, so in thst sense stereotypes are dangerous. But as long as thoughts remain thoughts, where is the problem? One cannot be a thought police, either.

So my conclusion is that we must distinguish between thoughts and actions.

And I'm not hurting anyone by believing that said guy is a dick who is just covering up his own racism. Having racist attitudes does 'hurt'. One cannot be neutral when it comes to this matter. Sure he might not be murdering immigrants, but alienating them at work, firing them or harassing them if in a position of power, and not doing anything to stop the campaign of violence against them is 'hurt'.

But firing them etc. are actions, not just thoughts. All I am saying is, one cannot be a thought police.

The problem is that it's ignorant and bigoted. Obviously there ain't much a person can do about someone's dumb and bigoted ideas beyond calling them out for it.

So yeah a dumb motherfucker can go ahead and be a dumb motherfucker, but he can't cry when people call him out on being a dumb motherfucker.

Methods of social humiliation can be employed to ostracize and isolate bigoted opinions.

Kind of like: I disagree with your dumbness, but I will defend to the death your right to be dumb.

Whether it's a thought or action, it's certainly not acceptable.

Fuck bigotry.

Sort of I guess. Except I'm never going to ever defend anyone for being dumb. Of course I don't think the state should play a role in dealin with bigots and fascists but that's purely a practical matter.

Not acceptable? What do you mean by that? If an individual has taken no action but held what would be considered a negative steerotype in his mind for decades, would you suggest something be done?

Nothing in my view, even if they were gather on internet forums and preach racism to one another for example. What shouldn't be done is giving someone a gun and making them a neighborhood watch who isn't under the jurisdiction of the police. But some would say that's a different issue entirely.

Personally oppose the bigotry and racism of others, educate and dissect their 'arguements' in support of their beliefs. It may take time, but enough pressure exerted from any and all that oppose a bigotry will lead to it's eradication (every new generation, I think, means the old racist stereotypes and ideas get chipped away)

Actual government legislation can be trickier in this area, if it's just people's thoughts and ideas being punished...can lead to backlashes and sympathy for groups decrying restriction of their rights

Holding negative stereotypes is harmful in that even if someone doesn't consciously do anything about them, they must surely influence their actions on a subconscious level. For example, stereotyping young black men as violent gang members means that the person will feel unsafe in areas where young black men live and avoid them, which creates an atmosphere of segregation. Or teachers who believe African Caribbean kids won't do as well at school will end up creating a self-fulfilling prophecy where the African Caribbean kids they teach don't live up to their potential. Negative stereotypes are a problem and need to be challenged.

I think I sense trolling...

Anyway, for the record, negative stereotypes are not okay.

I'm more concerned about "positive" stereotypes. The kind of shit that is accapeted by society as fact.

My personal experience is the "All Asians are good at math", You have any idea the inadequacy I felt going through school when people would spout this garbage? I'd fucking rack my brain all night wondering what was wrong with me.

Positive stereotypes are not frowned upon by society at large. This is bad and needs to be addressed, ALL stereotypes are bad.

"Blacks are good at basketball, Italians are good cooks, Asians are good at math ect ect"

I know this seems petty, but it is a real issue. Does anyone have any good reading and studies on this?
