Wow, I had no idea about this. It was apparently made to counterbalance the whole May Day movement.

It's also the feast day of St. Joseph. Pope John Paul II decided to make "St. Joseph the worker" have his feast day on May 1 to also instill a reactionary image for the day. He is pantron saint of workers and anti-communism because his "patience, obedience, and diligence" are examples of how a good worker should behave according to Catholic theology. The whole thing is disgusting, really.

May Day originated from here=not only don't we celebrate it, but our government comes comes up with bullshit holidays just to distract the working class from it. Wonderful!!!
