The road from the house of ghosts in Mexico has taken Nora Volkow to a place of influence in Washington. She starts each day with a seven-mile run, getting a healthy dose of dopamine. And looking forward down the road, she sees a day when science might banish the curse of addiction.

Nora Volkow: A cure would be fantastic. And that means you get a medication like an antibiotic. I cure you.

Volkow's labs and others around the country are working to develop vaccines to block drugs from entering the brain. The complexities are enormous, and progress is slow.

Nora Volkow: We're not there yet. But perhaps one day we may be. And in my brain, if you don't dare to think very ambitious things, you'll never be there.

obviously this could be helpful with more serious drugs, but I have no doubt if discovered the US government would pass a law mandating all businesses give monthly "vaccines" to their employees

there is also a bunch more to the interview, including some stuff about Trotsky. To be honest she sounds like a very boring person...

Keep us from getting high?

Doesn't she know that the only reason why they made marijuana illegal is so that the corporations can make more profit by using timber as paper, because hemp was a cheaper raw material which caused them to make less money?

Or she does know this and she is just working with the bourgeoisie. I guess it runs in the family....

that is not why marijuana is illegal, nor is it why marijuana was made illegal.

Are you kidding me?

You never heard of the great William Randolph Hearst campaign? Okay why was it made illegal then? Mister smarty pants

Harry Anslinger got some additional help from William Randolf Hearst, owner of a huge chain of newspapers. Hearst had lots of reasons to help. First, he hated Mexicans. Second, he had invested heavily in the timber industry to support his newspaper chain and didn’t want to see the development of hemp paper in competition. Third, he had lost 800,000 acres of timberland to Pancho Villa, so he hated Mexicans. Fourth, telling lurid lies about Mexicans (and the devil marijuana weed causing violence) sold newspapers, making him rich.

Some samples from the San Francisco Examiner:

“Marihuana makes fiends of boys in thirty days — Hashish goads users to bloodlust.”

“By the tons it is coming into this country — the deadly, dreadful poison that racks and tears not only the body, but the very heart and soul of every human being who once becomes a slave to it in any of its cruel and devastating forms…. Marihuana is a short cut to the insane asylum. Smoke marihuana cigarettes for a month and what was once your brain will be nothing but a storehouse of horrid specters. Hasheesh makes a murderer who kills for the love of killing out of the mildest mannered man who ever laughed at the idea that any habit could ever get him….”

I am not sure if the story is true or not, but it is plausible. William Randolf Hearst was a.) a huge asshole b.) had a lot of money invested in non-hemp based paper c.) did in fact lobby for the outlawing of marijuana as well as used his various media holdings to demonize it.

I heard it was andrew mellon who had newspaper stocks, but capitalism in general runs off of weakened proletarians who have no vision due to things like drugs and social alienation, like look at how opium was used in china. One of the first things the bolsheviks did was outlaw vodka, but it didn't work since the soldiers who they told to let's say seize alcohol would instead drink it... But i wouldn't have a problem with shutting down a shitload of those indian reservation liquor stores or the ones that plague minority communities.

Mister smarty pants :rolleyes:I have heard of it because every stoner kid talks about it. and I don't believe it's the reason marijuana was criminalized. I think marijuana was criminalized as a result of racism, misinformation (which was going around long, long before William Randolph Hearst), and lobbying combined.

IIRC the final nail in the coffin for weed was what zeekloid mentioned ^^^

The congressional testimony consisted of "mexicans are crazy because of marijuana" and "it makes black men want to rape white women" along with "shut up doctors nobody cares what you have to say about marijuana not being bad"

Also lol at the paper theory, you know the world is bigger than just america right?

But the USA put pressure on other nation states to criminalise cannabis, once it had done so itself.

The way I heard it, the key industry that benefited from the criminalisation of cannabis was the American cotton industry, as hemp was a rival fibre. This also suited the interests of the petro-chemical industry because cotton requires pesticides in order to thrive, whereas hemp doesn't.

I think it is also true that Hearst's newspapers led the way in the campaign to criminalise cannabis, utilising anti-Mexican racism ideologically, in order to win popular support.

Yes did you even check out the link I gave you?

Marijuana is illegal because:
Racism
Fear
Protection of Corporate Profits
Yellow Journalism
Ignorant, Incompetent, and/or Corrupt Legislators
Personal Career Advancement and Greed

A series of thing made it illegal.

Usually when the raw materials are cheaper the corporations make more profits, not less.

You, sir, are a complete imbecile. And idiots like you, who believe politics are hereditary, should be banned immediately from a left-wing board; it is a very reactionary position, bordering on Hitlerism.

Wow, you idiots that took Bostana's joke seriously need mental help. He was obviously joking. No one believes politics are hereditary.

There are racist jokes, sexist jokes, chauvinist jokes, and jokes that rely on the idea that politics, responsibility, guilt, etc, are hereditary.

But I don't think he was joking at all. He really believes that Trotsky's granddaughter's politics are due to Trotsky DNA. Or at very least doesn't think that saying such monumentally cretin absurd is reprochable.

If it isn't his position, let him say out loud that it wasn't. Else, gulag with him.
He can't even complain; it is where his beloved Uncle Joe would have sent him, for supporting "bourgeois decadence" in the form of legalised marijuana.

Racist jokes, Sexist jokes, and Chauvinist jokes are bad because they demean entire groups of people. Claiming politics are hereditary is at most stupid, but not offensive.

Are you seriously making the leap of logic that because he made a provocative joke, he must somehow believe it too?

Jokes like this don't rely on claims of fact, they rely on non-sensical claims as a means to generate amusement.
