i've been having trouble sleeping lately i dunno why but i've been tossin' and turnin' all night - resorting to whiskey and press-ups to numb me into something resembling slumber
my ipod is mostly soul and funk and hip hop with some blues and similar stuff - none ideal for sleeping to
what's good? i was thinking maybe grouper and similar stuff but any shouts are cool (and needed)

Indian classical music, epsecially the sitar and tabla. I often put a disc in the player at night, and just drift off on the sofa...:)

My brother sometimes uses ambient music like Brian Eno to sleep to, though I'm not really a fan myself.

I can fall alseep to anything I like really, seems like right after I close my eyes it happens. Post-Rock is perfect for it though, this album is a good candidate

I have a winamp playlist for when I'm about to head to sleep. It contains some Enya, Enigma, and other ambiance music; "nature" tracks of rainstorms and so on; many pieces of instrumental music which I find conducive to relaxing; and a few recordings of chanting. The chants, like the instrumental music, are varied; some are from the Christian churches, other are Buddhist meditations. I'm not an adherent of either (or any) religion, but I like the sound of Benedictine chanting and so on.. I also have some jazz titles in this playlist, mostly 'slow' jazz that makes good background music.

Maybe you could try to listen to some guided mediations or even try to listen binaural beats. Some says that it can be very helpful. Google : Binaural Beats and click on the wiki link for more information...:)

Not sure if this post will be read, but I suggest that instead of listening to music, you listen to university lectures on your MP3 player, such as The Teaching Company's lectures (known on the internet as TTC), lectures from iTunes U (some of which can be found elsewhere) and librivox recordings (audiobooks). Put that insomnia to good use. There is quite a few good lecture series dealing with political philosophy, economics and history.
*I would have posted links to those lectures, but I need 25 posts to be allowed to do so. Sorry.*

When I was a little kid, I always used to go to sleep listening to a cassette tape of Ennio Morricones soundtrack for The Mission. For some reason nowadays, though, when I fall asleep listening to music, e.g. on my mp3 player, and I wake up in the middle of the night and its still playing, it makes me feel super disoriented for some reason. I have no idea why. But yeah, I don't do it anymore.

Any Michael Parenti books on CD will do the trick.
Or for the brave at heart, the sweet sound of MotherCossak screaming for me to leave before the Colonel gets home.;)
