Shit I don't know where to post this so I'll just do it here
So I'm going to be heading to the Philippines in two days for a family thing and I've been packing and stuff
But then I found out that the Communist Party there was actively fighting the army and stuff.
And I wanted to bring Capital vol 2 and some shit on neocolonialism and imperialism
So I'm just wondering if that might be a bad idea.

EDIT: man whatever those guys don't even check luggage
Shit man what's the point of charging duties when you're not even going to enforce them

I don't think anything will come of it, other than maybe some temporary suspicion.

I think that the Phillipines government is more worried about attacks from the Islamist insurgency there than the Maoists at the moment. The Islamists seem to be launching more attacks, according to what I read in the local newspaper anyway (my town has a Phillipines section in our paper, due to the unusually large population of Filipinos here, and sometimes they have reports of attacks there).

I don't think all civilians are in any danger, but what if they check your lugage at the airport?
Im not sure if anything will happen, but be on the safe side comrade =)

I recommend taking this book with you while you're at it, Guerrilla Handbook (http://www.scribd.com/doc/121871/CIA-Guerilla-Handbook).

You're an American citizen, bro. They're not going to hassle you unless you bring weapons or want some bribe money.

The point being you're a westerner. And I know extortion by government officials in the Philippines is a problem, I visited there 4 months ago, and my friend was threatened jail time or to pay a fee.

if you're really that worried, get an e-reader (can find older models really cheap these days) and download it as a .pdf. put it on your e-reader, but rename it as something innocuous ("Wildlife of the Philippines" or some such) that way even if they go through your title list, they'll most likely go right past it.

Reminds me about the time I brought two books the IRA through the airport in Derry. I had a portable DVD player with me and it was at the bottom of my bag so they had to search me, they took out each book one by one. My parents saw the books and had a shit fit right there in airport security. Nothing came of it, the guy searching my bag just slyly said ''enjoy your reading'', with a stupid smirk on his face. My parents gave me a lot of shit for it too, I remember waiting for the plane to board, I felt like shit, my parents wouldn't even look at me, in hindsight they made a big deal over nothing.

Isn't it worse since you live in Calgary?

I was at the airport, coming home from a suicide conference (about preventing it, not attempting it, of course), and my associate and I were carrying-on our binders with SUICIDE written in giant letters on the front. Well, my associate accidently left his binder on the xray/search belt, and had to go back and ask the security guard for it back.

Impatient looking TSA agent: What does it look like, sir?

My associate: Erm...it says 'suicide' on it...

:D

We still got on our way, I'm sure you will too. Have a great time!
