It isn't done yet either, will put portraits of 4 prominent Socialists below it, probably Marx, Engels, Luxemburg, but not sure about the 4th yet.

I would do Stalin,Trotsky,Hoxha,Tito as the 4 faces.

^^Trotsky is the only one I'd consider. The rest, not a chance.

If you are a 'libertarian socialist' why would you be subscribing to great man theories by getting portraits done?

It's spelled right, I merely put Revolution in English rather than Spanish.

That was a really nice tatto =)
I really love how the hammer & sickle's look =)
If I would ever take a communist related tatto it would be a hammer % sickle on my arm or on my chest.
I would like to be compleatly sure of my views before I do that of course =)

can i argue strongly against getting anyone's portraits under it, firstly portraits are dificult as hell and a art on itself (there is maybe one or two tattooists that i know that i would let tattoo me with a portrait and i know a lot of really good tattooists), looking at the shading in your tattoo (which is done pretty good do not get me wrong) i do not think your tattoo'ist has the skills to do a good job in the portrait department. secondly i think the whole "row of revolutionary saints" thing is silly... (although i am always been partial to this shirt: http://fireandflames.com/images/ShirtACABBlueRedDesign.jpg :D)
i would also encourage you to fill in the blank spots of your tattoo and incorparate it in one full/complete backpiece, i like the lettering but the hammers&sickels seem to be a bit "floating" now.
its what i'm planning to do ultimately with my back tattoo, it seems the picture of mine has disappeared from the internet again (who said that everything you put online is there for ever???) but i have the slogan "¡No Pasarán!" plus the international brigades 3 pointed star in red and black across my shoulders, planning if i ever get rich enough to fill my whole back with a detailed tattoo done in only shading so that it looks what i have now is sort of stamped over it

Perhaps you should reserve such judgements, especially preposterous ones, when you see you an actual portrait done by the artist.

5th row down, and 5th picture over is one of mine, though there are plenty of other outstanding portraits In that selection.
I had this one done about 6 years ago, I've added shading and lettering on the otherside of my arm to complete my forearm sleeve, but this is just one of three outstanding portraits I've had done from him. If you dont know many good tattooists that can do portraits, I suggest you have them go to ThinkInk.com (or the link above will do), look at some Christian Haltemans work, and have them take notes. Not trying to sound arrogant here, just stating facts.

yeah, sorry, i really do not want to piss on your parade and i tried to say this as nice as possible as i really hate it to diss other peoples tattoo's but if you are going to be like this about i'm not going to sugarcoate it either;
no, those are not good portraits IMHO and i would not get a portrait tattoo done by that artist. not to say he is not a good tattoo'ist, far from it, but no, like said its a very elite group of tattoo'ists that can do portaits and again sorry but he is just not (yet) one of them. but by all means go ahead and get some, just dont expect me to think they will look good (which isnt whats important anyway, you should like them, not me)

Except an opinion on the quality of artwork is not a 'fact' by any definition of the word.

Let's see some of these "elite" artists work then, cause I'm not convinced - especially considering my artist has won awards for some his work, and I've had professionals who been in the business for 30+ years say my portraits are nothing short of outstanding and wanted to know who did them - not to mention the thousands of compliments I have got over the years in general. Eh, cant please everyone I guess, whatever.

this would be one of the only tattooists here in amsterdam i would let tattoo a portrait on me: http://classicinkandmods.com/claudias-tattoo-gallery-01/
sadly she just moved from one tattoo studio to another so very little of her work is online and no portraits...
but again, do not get me wrong, i do think your tattooist is more than skilled enough in a whole range of fields, esp his more dark comicbook style stuff and his skulls and so, its just that portraits (as in almost photograpic representations of existing peope) are a speciality you need a knack for that is not for everybody, its just something to fuck up so easy...

That one colored portrait is quite nice. Still, comparing color to black/grey is apples and oranges. Wouldnt say her work is any better than my artist (or any worse) from what I can see here, but I would need to see some more of her portrait work to be really sure (especially black/grey ones). I agree that portraits are very difficult to do and it can be difficult to find a artist who can do them exceptionally well - hell my artist is the only one in his shop that can do them on such a level, and the other artists there usually refer customers to him if they want a portrait done. That said, I don't think it is narrowed down to as a select few artists as you think. There is so much unseen talent out there that we don't know about, it is crazy, especially where I'm from (Los Angeles), where the black/grey portraits and realism scene is very prominent (since this is where it originated, with Mr. Cartoon being probably the most famous).
