does anyone know where the name 'cuba' came from ? , ive been reading a comic-novel by a guy called rius, all about cuban history and the revolution and the US intervention etc, but early on it establishes that the spanish calle the island 'ave maria' , but over time it was changed to cuba.

I think(just my guess) that the Cuba name was from the Carribean sea :)

Cuba: The largest island of the West Indies, discovered by Columbus in 1492, on his first voyage. The word Cuba seems to have been a general term meaning "district," since we learn from Las Casas that the district was called Cuba nacan, the "central province," from "cuba," a "territory," or "province," and "nacan," "middle."
