Oppose U.S. War Moves Against Syria and Iran
We Don’t Want Endless Wars for U.S. Empire
The U.S. is once again committing the crime of threatening war, now against Syria and Iran. President Obama has repeatedly said that direct military action “is not off the table.” The aim seems clear: regime change, to replace governments that do not toe the U.S. line.
Neither the governments of Iran nor Syria has threatened or attacked the U.S., while the U.S. government has paid and armed opposition forces in both countries and lined up U.S. and other military forces ready for war. The U.S. has imposed economic sanctions on both countries in an attempt to weaken them.
Let us not forget the international principle of the sovereignty of nations--the right of any country not to be attacked by the big imperialist powers and to determine their own affairs (as stated in the UN Charter, which the U.S. has signed on to). The responsibility of the people here in the U.S. is to stand against U.S. government aggression abroad (and at home). Whatever any of us may think about other governments or their political systems and culture, it is our duty to hold back the bloody hands of the U.S. government.
What the corrupt U.S. warmongers have in mind is to have complete control of the Middle East and its oil, and embark on dangerous confrontations with China and Russia to compete with them for profits and power. The U.S. banksters and corporations that run the government--the 0.001%,--require war and occupation for their profits, while expecting us to pay for and face the consequences of their reckless, lawless adventurism.
Let’s note that the U.S. government promotes various excuses and lies to justify attacks on Iran and Syria, just as it did in earlier years against Vietnam or Iraq, to justify wars against those countries.
On Iran, the U.S. keeps insisting, without evidence, that the Iranian nuclear program is for more than producing electricity. This is complete hypocrisy for the U.S. and Israel-- its client state--to create hysteria about Iran’s nuclear plants and intentions in the Middle East. Both have nuclear weapons and a history of aggression. After all, the U.S., not Iran, is guilty of attacking Iran’s neighbors--Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Libya, etc., none of which had attacked the U.S. Iran has never invaded or threatened to invade the U.S. or any other country.
On Syria, the U.S. demonizes the head of state with unproven assertions about who is attacking civilians, and suppresses information from Wikileaks and other sources about how the U.S. has secretly paid various forces to create an opposition to the government. This is the same scenario the U.S. mounted about Libya to justify the recent U.S. slaughter and destruction in that country.
We the people need to oppose the U.S. war moves against Syria and Iran, as well as other countries in the world. And we need to prepare to oppose the war making summit to be held in Chicago in May when the NATO Summit will be in town, whose attacks on other countries are attacks on the interests of the great majority of the American people. In general, we need to establish a democracy here--of, for, and by the people, with a peace and justice agenda, and recognition of our rights to quality jobs for all, healthcare, education, housing; and our right to speak and assemble.
PREPARE TO JOIN AN EMERGENCY RESPONSE AT 5 p.m. AT FEDERAL PLAZA IF THE U.S. OR ANY OF ITS PROXIES MOUNTS AN OPEN MILITARY ATTACK ON IRAN OR SYRIA before noon on any day, and at 5 p.m. the next day if the attack begins after noon. HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND TO THE NATO & G8 SUMMITS IN MAY?
Do they benefit the 1% or the 99%?
In school most of us learned that NATO was something good--according to our textbooks. Now that NATO is coming to Chicago for a summit with 50 heads of state and military leaders, we’re investigating for ourselves. It turns out that NATO isn’t what we were taught. And the G8 turns out to be an organization of the 1% to get more profits from the 99%. Check out the facts we uncovered and draw your own conclusions:
NATO--led by the U.S. is the largest military bloc in history. It has used its military power in many countries, killing hundreds of thousands of children and others. US-led NATO is responsible for wars in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
The U.S. organized NATO after World War II to ensure U.S. domination in Europe. It aimed to block the growing influence of the Soviet Union because of its support for anti-colonial and other liberation struggles. Since then, NATO has expanded from 12 to 28 member governments, plus partnerships with some 50+ governments in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
At the summit meeting in Chicago, May 20-21, NATO’s agenda will include discussion of what to do about the occupation of Afghanistan in the face of Afghan resistance, how to expand against China in Asia, and how to try to box in Russia. Discussion is expected on NATO’s war on Libya last year as a model to be repeated elsewhere, such as Iran or Syria.
Meanwhile, the countries NATO has invaded are left with mass destruction of infrastructure, damage to the environment, and tens of thousands wounded or killed. Today, Libya, for example, is in chaos. The new government backed by the U.S./NATO is unable to control gangs using weapons left from the war to kill more Libyans. It’s a human disaster. Yet NATO claims this war was a “humanitarian mission.” What did NATO members gain?--access to cheap oil, the opportunity to build a U.S./NATO base, and a government they expect to cooperate with the policies of NATO countries. This, and similar results in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, and Iraq, is why we condemn NATO and plan to rally against it on May 20.
Right now, U.S./NATO governments are continuing interference in both Iran and Syria, with sanctions, funding and arming of opposition groups, and threats of regime change—with President Obama declaring repeatedly that the option of open military attack remains on the table. He is violating international law in making such threats. It is both illegal and unjust for the U.S. and the other NATO countries to threaten to attack countries which have not attacked them. The motive of the U.S. government is clearly not humanitarian. It’s to secure strategic position and oil in the Middle East, overthrow governments that do not submit to U.S. dictate, and further surround Russia and China, its rivals.
Both NATO and G8 were scheduled to meet in Chicago, but President Obama--after hearing about the planned protests in Chicago-- moved the G8 to Camp David in Maryland. But we’ll still be opposing both here.
Our research reveals that the Group of 8 also helps the U.S. in its drive to control the world. It holds a yearly summit of the heads of eight states that control most of the global economy and military power--led by U.S. corporations and their U.S. government. The G8 includes Britain, Germany, Japan, France, Italy, Canada, and Russia--but not China. At a time when the world’s people try to live on $2 a day, the G8 meets in secret to discuss how to further squeeze the people of various countries for maximum profits. This includes high interest loans through the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, and austerity budgets that cut social programs, in order to pay the endless interest on the loans.
Consider these demands-- that NATO and G8 be dismantled, with all troops brought home now, and that all IMF and World Bank loans be cancelled, most having already been repaid through crippling interest payments. Our responsibility to people in other countries is to help get the U.S./NATO and the G8 off their backs. We must fight for an anti-war government and outlaw obscene loans that require governments to deprive their people of necessities. More and more peoples are rising up to say NO! We have a common enemy and can not let the US/NATO and the G8 continue their ruthless crimes.
Let’s raise our voices together and organize against NATO and the G8. Join in the demonstration on Sunday, May 20, noon, at the Petrillo Band Shell in Grant Park (north of Jackson between Columbus and Lake Shore Drive). Also, come to a counter-summit on the weekend of May 12-13 at Occupy headquarters, 500 West Cermak.
