Here is an illustration of how desparate the jobs market has become:

When I was looking for work, although it's many years ago, even though I had been to uni, I had to try and get what I could. I applied for a job as a bin man (refuse collection). The council department would not send out an application form, cos too many peeps had applied. So I phoned the Equal Opportunities Department, and forced the issue. The refuse depot then had to send me a form. It was numbered 500 and something. And the closing date was weeks away. So for 1 refuse collection job, there was over 500 applications. I didn't get the job anyway.
