ok before i sound like some slavophile tankie whatever i will admit this, ever since i was 11 i had a fascination with russian history and culture.
ok now onto what matters.
a relative of mine lives in St. Petersburg. I have a way to get into russia (apparently it takes a letter of invitation) I really want to go outside of the americas and since my relative is there, i will at least know one person who speaks fluent english (as well as a pretty good amount of russian) and i could hang around at his place.
are the fascists and stuff such a problem that going there might bring personal harm to me? i know my relative got cracked in the head by someone outside his apartment once but yeah.
maybe i could meet some people from AKM or RCWP-RPC?
thoughts on travel to russia?
oh and this isnt like moving or anything, its just some vacation time.

What are you planning on doing? I don't think you'll be in serious harm unless you go out looking for it.

Nah, you just sound like yet another Westerner who is obsessed with Russia and doesn't give a damn about the Poles, Czechs or Slovaks.
Right, now that's out of my system...

A formality. Basically you have to know someone who lives there, someone from a university, or whatever.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE endevour to learn some of the language before going. There's nothing worse than someone going to stay somewhere that cannot try and get by, or at least makes an effort. You'll find that outside of many bigger cities in Russia English is pretty much useless as well. In fact, many people in cities won't speak it either!

No. Unless, as has been said, you're looking for it.

Why would you want to if you can't communicate in Russian? Smacks a bit of the 'lefty tourist'.

It's a great country so enjoy it. The food is great, the people are friendly, the sights are stunning.

If you're not white, then you could run in to some problems. If you're white you'll probably be fine (unless you're like greek or sicilian or something then they'll probably see you as not white). You'll be fine if you travel with someone. St Petersburg should be fine anyway.

well i can read cyrillic at an elementary level and ive had a pocket phrasebook for years which i on a rare occasion flip through.
i mean, if i was planning on actually going i would read up on it quite a bit. and try to imerse myself in the language with movies and music (not red army choir lol).

Maybe you should go off the beaten path. St Petersburg sounds terribly tourist-y. You should go to Petropavlovsk instead!

Because it's a large city, a cultural and artistic hub, and an economic centre?

Hm, there is a case to pass cash for donation from Russia to the revleft through a mediator.
