Communism=where government controls everything about daily life
Socialism =where is mixed control
Now if this makes sense, what sane person would want communism?
Im too afraid to stand up for my beliefs, and I really like this teacher. So thoughts?

Well, it doesn't make sense, so don't worry about that.
Simply debate her in a polite manner and if she is as mature as she would like to believe than she will respect your views.

My thoughts are either you should look to conquer your fear. It isn't hard to refute those arguments. The least you could say is that's an oversimplification and does no justice to further understanding. If the teacher is likable he/she will respect your opinion. The most likely outcome is she/he will try to mock you and then end it all with "good question though" or "did that help answer your question?". High school is bullshit man but it isn't a crime to speak out against the curriculum.. yet.
peace & good luck bro

That's a pretty standard high school textbook definition.. She is only going to teach the curriculum, so even if you do prove her wrong, she'll still defend that definition.

Offer to write a report on why that is wrong, and turn in The Communist Manifesto.

I was going to write my idea but fuck it, this is the best thing you could possibly do. Seriously, do this!

Horrible advice, as the teacher would never believe that a high school student wrote such (not to mention that she is bound to already know of its existence).
Write an essay and use quotes from the manifesto.

I had a very similar load of it (this was my ultra-right republican economics teacher so I shouldent of expected different)
Democratic socialist: "elected fairly" in democratic socity
Authoritarian socialist: brings socialism through violent revolution
Communism: when the government owns everything
It was so fun trying to exsplane why this is wrong by even directly quoting the communist manifesto but he ignored it and I was afraid this lesson would fill everybody's heads with lies but luckily everyone was bored and seemed very uninterested so it all turned out.

The two aren't comparable in any significant way. Simply state their grave differences and leave it at that.

I don't believe in government control, rather equal control of production among the peasants and workers. A combination interconnected could provide everyone their needs, and the laborers won't be exploited by the state and the bourgeoisie.

Just leave your teacher alone. Save your publically made objections for College, where your Teacher will care. You cannot expect a great introduction to Communism in a high school, friend.
If such claims actually pose an ideological threat to you, that make you cringe and confuse you, perhaps you should focus on strengthening your own understanding of Communism instead of relying on others to do so in order to receive a positive or helpful input in regards.

Not for me. The question of socialism, communism, all these definitions...never came up once throughout my school career. So I'm always left scratching my head when everybody comes in talking about what their teacher said about this or that topic...

For me it wasn't just my teachers, I remember in my sophomore year the textbooks we used said communism is a totalitarian political system wherein government has complete control over all aspects of society.

Surprisingly many of my high school teachers gave a fairly balanced view of communism. On the one hand they said about how good the equality etc was, but on the other hand they (like 99% of the general population) thought it was where the government controlled everything.

I feel your pain, We've been going over the Vietnam war in my class and the ignorance of the teacher and students makes me cringe. But my teacher knows of my left tendencies he just is afraid to debate me on them I think, I say make your views known but don't try to antagonize anyone either. I find debating in high school is hard just out of your opponent's ignorance

What do you expect? The average American prole has the class consciousness of a rock. It's really not even worth trying to argue with your teacher as her thinking will be within a bourgeois framework.

That's exactly the same thing they teach here in New York.
My teacher also taught that Chiang Kai-Shek was a supporter of democracy. I'm betting that by the time we get to Pinochet, he'll be a champion of democracy and a man of the people.

My high school history teacher had actually met Chiang Kai-Shek. lol
He was a weird guy: he actually urged us to take a more "critical" view of Stalin. That Stalin's brutal acts and shit were a result of Russia's isolation and hostile opposition on the part of the rest of the world. He said that the west often views Stalin and the Soviet Union as the "bad guy" of the Cold War, but the reality is that it was the hostile western liberal democracies that put the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc on the defensive first, and that the Soviet Union was reacting to western imperialism rather than being the other way around as it is portrayed in the propaganda.
Pretty shocking to hear from a liberal, Catholic high school teacher, all things considered. He wasn't a closet Stalinist or anything, he just took the whole liberal "fair and balanced" thing REALLY far at times. That was years ago, who knows what kind of shit he's said since then.

I think it would be much easier if kids just learnt about ancient Egypt or something. Much less of a partisan issue, very few Ramesesists around to complain if the nature of the regime is misrepresented...

Tell her this, plain and simple:
Communism - where the PEOPLE control everything about daily life
Socialism - a term no one can agree on the meaning of, but basically meaning the same thing in the correct context
Teacher - indoctrinated by capitalism
Now if this makes sense, what sane person would want communism?
It doesn't make sense, and the people that would want it are far right nutcases.
Im too afraid to stand up for my beliefs, and I really like this teacher. So thoughts?
Well good luck fighting off the Nazis and the cappies when the revolution comes. Can you really like a teacher if she's too closed-minded to simply listen to you explain a basic political/economic view to her?

Speaking as someone who is a high school teacher, I don't know that debating the issue in class is a great idea. If you feel like you have the opportune time to make some comments then by all means do so, but we are honestly severely constricted by the curriculum and the difficulty of "covering everything." Plus, you have to consider how useful having an argument in class will actually be.
I understand the frustration of being a student with leftist views -- that was me in high school as well. It was one of the reasons I became a teacher, honestly. But I eventually came to realize that personal relationships and conversations are much more important to winning people over politically.
The classroom setting is honestly just not conducive to political discussion. A much better thing to do would be to discuss why you disagree with the teacher/textbook with your classmates during downtime at school, or discuss it with your teacher after class if you think she'll be sympathetic to you.
