So, am I the only one here who likes country music? By country music, I mean good country not that pop shit from music row, good shit like Hank Williams, Hank III, Johnny Horton, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash and others. Who do you listen too?

Haven't really listened to them but they sound like rockabilly, maybe, still good.
Yeah I listen to a fair bit of Johnny Cash, and some John Denver
I love Denver solely for writing a song about my state (West [by god] Virginia).

I like Waylon Jennings, Tammy "Why-not", Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, etc.
Present C&W I do not like much as it is dominated by triumphalist, flag-waving morons who crawl into their studios to record patriotic horse shit.

I'm not so much of a fan of Lynn but I love Waylon Jennings. I don't even consider that bullshit from music row to be country. You can't play shitty pop-rock in cowboy hats, add a fiddle or two and call it country; you exorcise it's entire soul out of the genre. Real country to me is raw, gritty, free and a reflection of working class struggles in America not for example, some song about you being a socially awkward nerd oogling over some boy who likes the head cheerleader (yes, I'm looking at you Swift).
This being said, I did like some of the Dixie Chicks political videos even if I'm not a fan of their music.

I'll have to look those up but I will say I am a huge fan of cajun music and culture generally and would love to get into that style more. I actually play myself and I've always thought it'd be neat to blend some blues and cajun influences into my music.

from what admittedly little i know about cajun music, it refers to the traditional music of the descendants of the french acadians. creole as the name implies comes from the mix and miscegenation of cajun (acadian) musical traditions with those of other local populations namely african americans. contemporary creole music is often called zydeco. there are plenty of great compilations out there just have to search. i have a cajun comp called cajun vol. 1 abbeville breakdown 1929-39 it's really good. a lot of stuff by the alley boys of abbeville and some earlier stuff by like joe falcon and cleoma breaux

Rosenpenis, you are a legend. Roscoe Halcomb is one of my favorites. I love bluegrass, traditional folk, old time, and basically any other types of American roots music. I don't really like what people call "country music" nearly as much as those. Like pop country. I like some "pop" country music up till the sixties. I much prefer the sounds of true mountain music. I also like a lot of gospel folk/bluegrass even though I am not religious. It makes me happy.
I despise Hank III. I hate him.

aw yeah alison krauss is beautiful. great soundtrack. emmylou harris was in that as well. it's not easy to find great contemporary country but it is out there.
i fucking love gospel and most kinds of american roots music. acoustic blues, field hollers, work songs, so on. as far as country goes im also more a bluegrass person. i like cajun but i love bluegrass. bill monroe is my fave. maybe more accessible or crossover ish than roscoe holcomb but gorgeous nonetheless.

Bill Monroe is a bluegrass legend. I think he has the best voice in bluegrass.
Allison Krauss isn't really my favorite, but that's one of the few songs of hers i like.
Edit: I also like prison work songs. They are just so powerful. The pain they felt.

I grew up on country music, and though I don't listen to it on a regular basis, I have a hundred or so C&W titles in my mp3 library. It's mostly "older" stuff, the most recent being late '90s or early '00s. I'm especially fond of Jerry Reed. I like country music mostly for its folk origins, but modern country is as commercialized as any other -- there's no human spirit invested in it, nothing for me to appreciate.
