During Mali's recent political instability, Tuareg rebels seized large parts of the country's north, and declared it an independent state, which they called Azawad.
But, while Azawad is yet to be recognised by any international organisations, not everyone inside the rebel-held territory is happy about their presence.
Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reports from Timbuktu. On one hand, it is good that no serious violence against civilians has been reported from the state, the rebels, or the other armed groups (though some of the Islamists have been kidnapping a few people I understand). These nationalities-the Songhai, Tuareg, Arabs, and others-have lived side by side since ancient Ghana. However this could be an explosive situation with multiple armed groups side by side, and with ethnic groups seeming to disagree about whether Azawadi nationalism is something worth pursuing.
