..He made a fascistic / nazi salute...the bastard's politics are well-known, why the long-winded article making numerous refs to left-wing groups, the 1968 olympics and feminists?

It isn't really a nazi salute but a knight templar one. I think.
But don't be surprised when the media mix things up, it happens all the time.

The article is right in that it was a popular salute among anti-fascists in Spain during the civil war.

The fascist salute is the classic flat palm gesture w/ arm and fingers straight out, not clenched fist.
