All socialist parties do some kind of business, like selling newspapers, fund-raising etc.

Why do they all fail so much? With all their economic and political knowledge they should be able to create a nice business and investment portfolio, no?

A while ago I talked to a very highly positioned socialist in an American party (I won't say who) And he had some interesting thoughts on the economy and how it would play out in the securities market. Everything he stated came true in the following weeks.

So I thought, if he could make money doing this, why does his party nearly beg people to donate?

Their goal is not to become rich or to become invested in the capitalist system. Their goal is to present their economic and social vision. If they wanted to make money they would have glossy covers and write about Justin Beiber's new girlfriend. The goal is to raise class-consciousness and they try to do that as best they can. I have no doubt that it can be done differently, with more success, but I don't know how at the moment. I'll think about it.

Thanks for the Musings,
