Other than his 2 pilgrimages to Moscow, he never left the Mainland.

Why?

He also never bothered to learn any languages. Seems like a very limited man.

He wanted to meet Stalin for talks, but Stalin kept making excuses. Eventually they had 2 meetings in Moscow in 1949/50after Mao won the civil war. Stalin had been backing the KMT.
