I noticed there was a thread on vintage clothing. And so I thought, why not post about one of my favourite interests: antiques.
I love them. I have a nineteenth century handcarved wooden 'elephant' table from India, and some wooden carvings of Ganesh (the elephant god in the Hindu pantheon), and some other wooden deities.
I have two pieces of Sylvac, a vase and a little jug with a squirrel for a handle. I have some pieces of Limoge ceramics, a Copeland Spode plate adorned with a mayflower, some Aynsley ceramics, and various other knick knacks.
I really like going into antique shops, and if I see one on my travels, I always make sure to spend a least a little time in there.
I also have some old family documents left to me by my great uncle, the earliest of which dates back to 1769. Plus an old family Bible, a great big thing, which dates from 1778.
Who else likes antiques? I don't want to appear geeky or anything, it's just that I really like old shit :)

Most of my books are antique, well, depending on what is antique to you (most are like twice as old as I am so I consider that antique).
Other than that I have a pretty plain wooden globe from the 1920s.

Nice one. The oldest book I have outside of family hand-me-downs, is a first edition of a book about life in India, during the time of the British occupation. It's by Denis Kincaid, and dates from 1938. I got it from an antiquarian bookshop round my way.
And the globe is pretty neat. Dating from the 1920s it's Art Deco. My mum's half-sister was into all that sort of stuff, and she had some mirrors and wardrobes and stuff.

That's defo an antique, comrade. Sweet :)

The only reason I go into antique shops are for political and labor stuff. I use to collect other things, but now I only look for old labor-union pins. Got a few interesting ones.

I should do this.
My friend got a Nazi officer hat in an antique shop for a movie I was helping her to make (oddly enough, the character we were using it for was supposed to be Stalin.)

I've got a 1940 copy of Rosa Luxembourg Her Life and Work by Paul Frolich and a load of other history books from just before or after WW2. I do love old books the smell, the brownish pages the creek of the spine as you open it. Yeah I love old books

When I was a young lad, I used to collect old coins. I have a couple of rare coins that are probably worth a decent amount.

Do it! Even if they're not revolutionary, old labor-pins are pretty badass. I use to live out in the Chicago metro, so I have tons of old Teamsters, UAW, and AFL-CIO buttons from the 30s-70s. Lots of interesting unions, like a union for taxi-cab drivers, and oil-chemical-atomic workers as well. I want an old IWW button!

Me too. Old books are well cool. There are quite a few second-hand bookshops round my way. But one in particular, is more of an antiquarian bookshop. It's got first editions of works by local poets and so on. Most of these are in a class case under lock and key, for obvious reasons. I got my book British Social Life In India:1608-1937 , from there, published in 1938.
And the 1940 copy of the book on Luxembourg....really sweet :)

So did I. I didn't have any really old ones, just a few that I found with a metal detector. One of my relatives got me into it, and I had pure fun. I once unearthed an old plumb line and a poker stand in a neighbours back garden. I also found a gold ring in a local park, which I weighed in at a jewellers for £12. I was still at school then - and thought I was rich :)
Thanks all for your replies. It's buzzin to know that others share my passion for things old.

I used to own a Nazi helmet, found it inside one of the Sherman Tanks in a Dump near our house. My comic turn, strutttin' was made more hilarious. 'cos they all knew the Yiddish refugee girls kept the helmet underneath their bed in the cold attic. The toilet was outside.

I just think it is terrific people collecting 'stuff'. Tomorrows antiques. I found a railway timetable 1897. What the hell use was that to me? Fellow at work was keen collector railway memorabilia. I gave it to him , he offered me money. I said no take it ...it'll only collect dust at my place. I just think of all the things that might be lost. Other pals refurbish old tractors steam pumps/engines. canal boats. windmills. Great hobbies, mountains of knowledge and expertise. Real assets, they can tell us who we are, who we were. But for them it would be lost forever.

I used to live in Virginia City, Nevada:

I used to find antiques all the time there. Most of the city had been destroyed in a huge fire a long ass time ago so you find stuff a lot. I used to climb around on the mountains all the time and I used to find beer/hard alcohol like whiskey bottles all the time, stuff from like the 1800's. But the whole city was is like an antique.
