Omg. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Check this out:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2128144/BBC-Salford-staff-offered-security-guards-boss-says-different-kettle-fish-London.html

Toffee-nosed, posh-arsed BBC workers who are relocating from London to Salford, are being offered security guards, to escort them from their place of work, to their cars and tram stops

Their boss has told them that Salford, in the deprived north, is "a different kettle of fish", than London.

Looks like they are scared of us Proles.

lol i mean it's being rapidly gentrified but the white city/shepherd's bush/east acton area where the beeb are currently based isn't quite the green and leafy wonderland that article makes out

The incidents include a BBC worker shot at with an air rifle as he cycled home and a producer who was chased by four yobs after he confronted them as they tried to steal bikes from BBC workers

In another crime, a BBC worker handed over a Hertz rental to a crook posing as a Hertz employee. There was also an assault on a member of security staff at Media City.

Various other crimes have taken place, including a string of thefts of computer gear from BBC employees.

Makes sense.

I live near Salford. There's plenty of thieving scum here. A friend of mine has had 2 guys with machetes break into his house at 3 in the morning on a sunday. They took his TV, two laptops, 200 in cash and his car (BMW 1 series).

Although It's not like London isn't crime ridden either or any other major urban area for that matter.

Because London's such a safe, crime-free place.

Seriously though, I think the level of prejudice and hatred that some in the South hold for the North of England is a largely ignored problem. This wouldn't be the first time the Beeb has discriminated against the North, and it won't be the last.

The reason for their thievery? I would assay the contributing factor is they inhabit an impoverished community, unable to indulge in the luxuries the well to do have. If their labor was able to provide the fruits as the reporters, the problem would almost instantly be nonexistent.

The thieving scum you talk of, are often the most deprived and alienated working-class people, who resort to crime in order to survive. Nobody wishes to be robbed. But to refer to some of the most wretched proletarians as 'thieving scum' is not, in my opinion, appropriate.

I resent your choice of words very strongly.

I feel that this kind of reactionary labelling and name-calling, is best left to the Police, and the right-wing, down-market tabloid media.

When used to describe those who break into the home of another prole to steal from them their belongings while threatening them with a machete i would say its a very nice way to describe those criminals and certainly appropriate.

Vouch for that michel, my tube depot was opposite the BBC at White City. White City Estate one of the top 10 worst in the country. Tube workers refused to stable at night until we were given protection. The walk from the depot was a nightmare, until we put our foot down. Yes a fair description scum. I tend to extend as much sympathy to them as they would to me. ie Nil. Well said Piet an apt description.

Right on the money.
Shoplifting, stealing from work, or the city are very different activities from threatening another worker with death in order to make him poorer.

If you look at my post#6, where I quoted Broseph Stalin, you will see the original words he used. He edited his post and added the content relating to machete attacks against his friends later. But his original words were only "Makes sense. I live near Salford. There's plenty of theiving scum here".

Had I been aware of the personal element, I might not have been quite so hard on him.

But I still maintain it has a reactionary quality, and is best left to the Police and the far-right tabloid media.

Take it. Or leave it.

Many of the BBC senior executives are toffee-nosed snobs. They are every inch the sophisticated London Hooray Henry crowd, and the very idea of having to come 'up north' to the new regional office, is to their mind I am sure, quite beneath them.

At uni, I shared a flat with a snob who had done a stint at the BBC. He went to a top private school, and once said he couldn't understand why private schools in Britain are called public schools. Cos as far as he was concerned, the only thing public about his school, was the people who came into clean, and the people he saw waiting at the bus stop, as his parents drove him through the school gates. He looked right at me as he said it, knowing I had been to a comprehensive.

It's enough to make them choke on their champagne haha :D

Yeah, they're horrible cars.

They are pretty expensive cars as well. At one time, they were a status symbol for the so-called 'yuppies'. You know the sort of thing, peeps who made shitloads of cash out of Thatcherite economic 'reforms', and carried around filofaxes, 'doing lunch' with colleagues, whilst workers were tossed on the dole.

I have worked at the BBC and yeah, all of the senior staff are toffs, but not everyone who works at the BBC is an asshole. And I don't think this has anything to do with them not being prole enough.

Well the BBC toffee-noses have been made out to look right a right load of dozy tossers now.

Look at this:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2129244/BBCs-new-Salford-home-SAFER-old-London-HQ-Government-figures-show.html

The crime rate around the new regional office in Salford, is actually less than the London office. So it is, in fact, SAFER for them.

This information has come from Government statistics :D

can i claim a bit of credit for being the first to suggest that was probably the case (albeit in a subtle way)?

Of cos you can, comrade. And now you have Government statistics to support your case :)
