Has anyone else here ever heard of/browsed the deep web? I find it to be an interesting part of the internet myself. It's also great because it's nearly void of government tracking and focuses on anonymity.

Yeah, it's nothing but drug trades.
We have a group that researches (http://www.revleft.com/vb/group.php?groupid=726) several technologies that are linked to the invisible internet.

While that is indeed a large part, there are certainly very good uses of the invisible internet, most certainly from a left perspective. This page from the TOR project (https://www.torproject.org/about/torusers.html.en) summarizes quite a few of them. This Freenet page (https://freenetproject.org/whatis.html) gives more reasons still.
