Zionism began in mid-to-late 19th century Europe. It argued that for an end to the oppression of Jews, which was quite rampant in Europe, there needed to be a Jewish homeland. It's essentially Jewish nationalism. Zionism said that due to historically religious connections with the Southern Levant (i.e., most of the current state of Israel), Jews should emigrate there.

A fairly high number of Jews who left for Palestine had leftist or Marxist orientations. My history professor (who is a Latvian nationalist, so you'll have to take the claim with a grain of salt) explained that Stalin hoped that the Soviet Union and Israel could develop ties along leftist lines, although it really didn't pan out.

The left is opposed to Zionism for the same reason it is opposed to other types of nationalism: They divide the working class. Some can argue that Zionism in practice has become worse than other nationalisms because of the way Israel treats Palestinians, who effectively live in the conditions of apartheid.

I don't think they really supported zionism but just what norwegianwood90 said have some connections.

Mostly because the land of the palestinians was stolen, and it's horrible how they threat the people there.

A reactionary blood and soil Jewish form of nationalism, although its origins were a direct result of the oppression European Jews experienced.
