In your personal life, how do your political views affect the love department? How important are your partners political views to you? Have you been turned down because of yours? Talk about any connection between the two, including maybe if you're in open relationships and why?

Not much. Pretty important. Sure.

If it's pretty important but it hasn't affected you much does that mean you tend to gravitate towards people with the same political views?

I don't really give a shit, and wouldn't want to be with anyone who would.

You don't think that if your partner was super conservative or whatever that it wouldn't bleed into your life in some way?

You don't think that if your partner was super conservative or whatever that it wouldn't bleed into your life in some way?I dunno, as long as she was pretty apathetic about her politics, as am I.

I prefer to date women who don't care much for politics. The last thing I want is to get in a fight with my significant other over politics.

I would never date a neo-nazi.

I wouldn't date someone who was vehemently anti-weed/lsd/etc. I don't care if they don't drink/smoke/whatever as long as they don't give a shit when I do.

Very few people outside my circle of close friends know my political views, so I doubt I've ever been turned down over politics.

I think reactionary views or uninformed views can sometimes get in the way of a truly fulfilling relationship. For example, when something comes on the news and everybody's talking about it, or you are describing your day and it involves going to a demonstration. You either learn to avoid those topics, or you just call it quits. I don't know, I guess it depends on the situation.

Psychologists have found that one of the best predictors of relationship success is partners who have similar political views. Make of that what you will.

I think having a partner that'd be cool with you going to conventions, congresses, big protests, bookfairs etc. basicaly traveling far and being away from them for long periods of time would be important for more serious relationships

I know from past experience that a woman would have to not be conservative or at the very least delusional about how good capitalism is. As my activism takes up so much of my life I know that a mate who doesn't want to be part of it couldn't be part of my life. It's unfair to her, to me and a lie if you try to make it work.

i dont really care beyond someone being socially operminded, i.e. not really racist or chauvinistic. beyond that i dont really care if they want to overthrow the state lol

7th April 2012, 15:26
It would matter to me if it was a serious relationship, in that I quite like talking about politics and I'm fairly active, so it would be a difficult topic to avoid. I can't be doing with social conservativism or any kind of discriminatory viewpoints. It's a massive turn-off when people show a lack of compassion for others. I think if I went out with someone who wasn't left of centre I'd quickly find myself resenting them.

Although having said that, my current boyfriend used to be a member of SWP, strongly thinks a state is necessary and is considering rejoining RESPECT... So I suppose politics can't be all that important.

i think that has more to do with their general values more than their specific political ideas.

but yeah my ex's have all been p. much left of center, if not more or less apathetic. Except one who was p. conservative and that entire relationship was weird as hell.

but seriously no I would not care about political views. I would probably even date a girl who is kind of homophobic or racist etc. because tbh I think most people have views or mindsets that stem from the same mindsets as those things, just ones that are more socially acceptable in society and therefore seen as not as anti-left as the ones that everyone already hates. the only thing about that scenario would be that it would require her to be someone who can tolerate being made fun of a lot.

Kinda unrelated but the local quasi clique of Republican girls really hate me because I organised a walk out at my high school, and I pretty much ignored their concerns since they just brought up the same questions which were along the lines of "Is prom gonna be canceled?" over and over and expected a different answer pretty much.

I wouldn't care much but in my experience politics have been a detriment to my personal relationships.

Finds out girl I sometimes bang just got a girlfriend. Finds out it's an open relationship... by getting laid. *socially awesome penguin* high fives anyone? A less bragalicious answer would be, yes I believe in open relationships. My own and others. Not in the hey let's just fuck around way, but seriously and truly. Monogamy and heteronormativity are something we are socially conditioned into and fundamental pillars of patriarchy and heterosexism. Not saying there is something inheretly wrong with boning people of only your opposite sex or being in a monogamos relationship, but we have to reckognize that this is a system made to benefit the ruling class and upheld through norms and sometimes through brute force, through homophobia and sexism. The idea of monogamy or rather the nuclear family is just as much an oppressive tool as the idea of the nation state as a natural union of the people.

I am doing my small part to fight this system everyday.
