Labour's biggest backer is threatening to slash its funding in protest at the partys support for the Governments cuts programme.

The Unite union will debate motions at its summer conference demanding a 10% reduction in the amount it gives to Labour.

In the past 12 months the union has given more than 2,500,000, making it Labours largest financial supporter.

One motion tabled for the June meeting says that at least 10% of the money it gives to the party should go towards a strike fund.

Conference resolves that until the Labour Party adopts and actively pursues policies in support of trade union freedom, at least 10% of members Political Fund contributions shall be used by Unite to directly campaign for trade union freedoms instead of being used for contributions to, or support for, the Labour Party.

This Conference resolves that until the leadership of the Labour Party publicly supports Unite members taking industrial action against austerity and in defence of public services, at least 10% of members Political Fund contributions shall be paid into Unites National Dispute Fund, the motion says.

The move follows anger within the union movement at Ed Ballss announcement that a future Labour government would not be able to reverse all of the Coalition cuts.

Other motions demand that sitting MPs must get nominations from 66% of affiliated trade union branches to secure automatic re-selection.

If passed, the motions will be a blow to Ed Miliband at a time when Labour is struggling to raise funds and still carries debts of more than 10million.

MP's are cheap to buy. Singularly or by the dozen. Spend the money in more meaningful ways promoting the members interests.

Unite is one of the biggest backers of Labour, and some people believe that it will never break its ties to them. I say it's time Unite withdrew their support wholeheartedly. As Dodger has said, spend it on the members. And also, spend it supporting and funding groups and parties that actually back the working-class and challenge the bosses head one. Fund the socialists, not the reformist moderates.

It's a tall order, for sure. But then it's up to socialist trade union members to campaign and push hard enough, to unseat the more moderate union leaders, and replace them with the right sort for the job :D
