Listen to the Chairperson of the Workers Party in America, Martin Sayles, discuss current issues and events from a working-class communist perspective LIVE every Saturday from 12-3 p.m. EDT (4-7 GMT) on The Martin Sayles Radio Show.I'm creating this thread to post weekly updates on what will be discussed on the radio show, as well as encourage listeners to call in and join the conversation.
If you are in the U.S. or Canada, you can call (866) 976-8792. If you're outside of the U.S. and Canada, or do not have ready access to a phone, you can join in by calling "saylesshow" on Skype.
You can also send an e-mail to
[email protected]; if we like it, we'll read it on the air. As well, there is a small chatroom on the show's website. Go to the "Listen Live!" page on the show's website and chat with other listeners ... and sometimes Martin himself.
To listen online, go to www.martinsayles.com (http://www.martinsayles.com) and either press play on the radio in the left-hand column or go to the "Listen Live!" page to access all three servers over which the show broadcasts.

TMSRS, April 7, 2012:
This Saturday’s broadcast of The Martin Sayles Radio Show will cover a lot of interesting and thought-provoking ground, and you are invited to join the conversation. In this coming Saturday’s show, we will talk about:
Detroit under de facto dictatorship — The Detroit City Council voted on Wednesday to accept a “consent agreement” that turns over all power in the city to a series of unelected officials appointed by the governor and state treasurer. What does this mean for working people in Detroit, and what kind of response should be organized?
Georgia passes “women as livestock” law — On March 29, after a marathon session that saw fistfights and walkouts, the Georgia state legislature approved a bill that would criminalize abortions after 20 weeks, with the only exception being if the woman’s life or health is threatened. No exceptions for rape or incest; no exception for if the fetus is dead.
U.S. Builds Client “Opposition” in Syria — Much like we saw in Libya last year, the U.S. is spearheading the establishment of an “opposition” loyal to Washington and Wall Street, which would be able to overthrow the regime of Bashir al-Assad and create a client state.
In-Depth: The Obesity Industry — The ballooning (excuse the pun) numbers of overweight and obese people in the U.S. is not simply a matter of excess and gluttony. Profits and lack of proper food safety are literally making people fat, sick and dying.
And as always, we will be taking your calls at (866) 976-8729, or by Skype at “saylesshow.”

Ack, took a while longer and missed the first 50 minutes :(

I only got around to listening to a few segments today. I had to babysit and as you might imagine that really dug into my time. The kid was in my room watching Toy Story and my headphones were busted. Hopefully next Saturday is better.

Do you know how many viewers the show the has been getting? I haven't been able to listen to it live yet, but I have been able to listen to the recordings and I have enjoyed them. I especially glad to see more communist media recently, so I hope this is able to expand to reach a large audience.

Our best was over 200 for the first show. It has fallen off since then, especially since we had some stumbles throughout February. We're looking for ways to advertise the show more, using Google AdSense and other options (such as this thread, the RevLeft social group for listeners of TMSRS, etc.). We are working on arranging some interviews that might be big draws for the show, as well as looking into a live broadcast from some of the larger events coming up this summer. Somewhere along the line, we'll probably be designing an app for Android phones, too.

I've been wanting to check this out, but I haven't had the time lately. I really need to get around to that. It's good that there is a program like this, I haven't heard of anything else like it.

Something coming close are the CPGB podcasts (http://cpgb.podbean.com/), but that's different from a radioshow of course, which is more interactive (having callers and such).
But yeah, that's pretty much it as far as I know as well.

The MSRS has callers as well... just not a lot as it is a new show.

I meant that it is the MSRS that is having callers. The CPGB podcasts do not. The latter is just commentary on recent events.

That radio show is really an awesome idea. It can be very effective indeed. I've been hoping for my party to start a radio show/station of some kind as well, perhaps one day we will. :)

TMSRS, April 14, 2012:
My apologies for the tardiness of this post. I was spending so much time on the technical side of today's show that I had to push this to the end of the line. So, for your listening pleasure, here's the lineup for today's show:...
The "Chicago Spring" -- It looks like the upcoming NATO Summit in Chicago on May 19 is going to be a critical event that will determine the future of the #Occupy movement, as well as a test of the new police-state laws Mayor Rahm Emanuel has enacted. (We may broadcast live from the events, if all works out.)
Tennessee's New Anti-Science Law -- A new bill passed by the Tennessee state legislature, and made into law without the governor's signature, now allows science teachers in public schools to present "alternative" theories to those of evolution and climate change. The flying spaghetti monster could not be reached for comment.
Santorum Pulls Out! -- So it all came down to candidatus interruptus for the former U.S Senator from Pennsylvania. What will Tricky Dick Santorum do with his free time? Idle hands and all that.... Oh, and, if there is time, I'll cover two other Washington politics-related stories. If you want to know what they are, you'll just have to listen.
The Ozzie Guillen Incident -- In this on-demand culture, there seems to be very little time for listening properly, much less grasping the nuances of what would otherwise be seen as a fairly coherent sentence. From newspaper cartoons to cable news commentators to the blabberbloggosphere, No one could take the extra 10 seconds to listen to the full statement.
In-Depth: The Latest in the Trayvon Martin Case -- This week, we will concentrate on how the prosecution and defense counsels are viewing the next steps now that George Zimmerman is behind bars in Seminole County. We'll also bring you up to date on the presence of Nazis in Sanford, Fla., and how some local media are embracing and "mainstreaming" their reactionary terrorism.
And as always, our third hour is for YOU, the listener. Call us and discuss any of the above issues, or bring up a question completely unrelated. Either way, you'll be able to air your opinion and join in the conversation.
Can something be done about that echo when Martin is talking? I find it quite annoying to listen to.

We have a great show coming up tomorrow, one you won't want to miss. Here's a small preview of the topics we'll be covering:...
Secret Service Sex Scandal -- What do you get when you mix U.S. Secret Service agents and Colombian hookers? Apparently, enough to send the media into a frenzy, make the White House blush and send every mouthpiece of the ruling classes into moralistic apoplexy. But is that really what all this is about?
Latest in the War on Women's Rights -- No matter how much they try to deny it, the reactionaries keep proving that there is a war on women. Unfortunately, women are losing. In Ohio and Wisconsin, the attacks on Planned Parenthood have reached a stage where they are literally threatening women's basic health and well-being.
Teamsters Organize Truck Drivers at L.A. Port -- The Port Division of the Teamsters scored a small victory last week, organizing drivers at the Australian-owned Toll Group. What does this mean for the drivers and unionization of the ports?
FBI Seizes Anonymizing E-Mail Server -- Last Wednesday, FBI agents entered the facility shared by Riseup Networks and May First/People Link, taking a server that only has software for sending and receiving anonymous e-mails. The FBI knows that this server stores no data, but took it anyway.
In-Depth: The Latest in the Trayvon Martin Case -- This week saw joy and relief turn to anger and frustration as George Zimmerman, the admitted murderer of Trayvon Martin, be released on $150,000 bond. During the hearing, Zimmerman took the opportunity to "apologize" to the Martin family. They weren't buying it, and rightly so.
In the third hour, we open up the airwaves to YOU, our listeners. Call us and discuss any of the above issues, or bring up a question completely unrelated. Either way, you’ll be able to join in the conversation.

TMSRS, April 28, 2012:
Greetings, everyone. If you’ve been following The Word this week, then you know we’ve got one hell of a show for you today. This week is going to seem to many of you a little “close to home,” in the sense that much of the broadcast will about taken up with local and Michigan matters — especially the in-depth section of the program. I couldn’t avoid that if I tried.
My sincerest apologies go to Debora Allen of the Philadelphia Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, who was originally scheduled to be interviewed this week. We hope to have her on next week or as soon as possible.
And with that, here is the lineup for today’s show:…
The (Type)Face of Dictatorship — After a year of gathering hundreds of thousands of signatures across the state, and then several months more of nail-biting suspense about whether they had enough of them that were valid, the petitioners who have been fighting to overturn Michigan’s “Emergency Manager” law, Public Act No. 4, had all of their petitions thrown out last Thursday by the state Board of Canvassers. The reason? The font size was “too small.” That single technicality forced a 2-2 partisan split on the board, which meant that the entire effort was invalidated. And with it, so was the last remnant of democratic functioning in the state.
The Queer Project Report — Our correspondent, Curtis from Maine, gives us a written report on the current issues in the LGBTQ community from a working-class communist perspective. The issues include commentary on the CeCe MacDonald trial and California’s SB-1172, which would outlaw so-called “reparative therapy” for under-18 LGBTQs. You can read more of Curtis’ commentary and news about LGBTQ issues at thequeerproject.wordpress.com (http://thequeerproject.wordpress.com/).
Racism in Georgia? I’m Shocked! — The owner of a self-described “Klan Bar” in Draketown, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, has done it once again. Armed with a stack of plastic letters and a light-up sign like you see in front of many businesses, this racist scumbag has once again dropped the N-Bomb in reference to Barack Obama. This is not the first time it has happened, and it won’t be the last … as long as things stay the way they are.
Martin vs. the Mayor — Instead of going into details, you can view the information available so far here (http://www.martinsayles.com/2012/04/26/martin-vs-the-mayor/) and here (http://www.martinsayles.com/2012/04/27/martin-vs-the-mayor-2-late-night-at-city-hall/).
Of course, the third hour belongs to YOU, our listeners. You can call us toll-free at (866) 976-8729. If you are outside of the U.S. or don’t have a phone handy, you can call us free over Skype; our Skype address is saylesshow. You can also e-mail us at show[at]martinsayles.com (

The two sort of go together. The musical interludes are there for the news and commercial breaks that would be required by a commercial radio station. The first six minutes would be an hourly newsbreak and a couple commercials/PSAs; "Dark Star" is the music underlay that would otherwise not be audible.
With the launching of UCPA Newsday next Monday, we will have a newsbreak for the top and bottom of every hour.
