Didn't we have this thread a few weeks ago? Like, almost exactly the same?
But yes, Mormonism is a silly ridiculous sect, up there with the scientologists, Moonies and Räelians.

Isn't every religion a sect? Only some are more accepted than others.

Indeed. But some have had more time than others to iron out the absurdities from their practical policies. Most of the time, anyway...

An interesting question is whether, if Mitt Romney had a snowball's chance of getting into the Oval Office (other than as a tourist), his religion, which is probably justly described as science fiction (plus historical fiction about early North America), would have any impact on his decision making. Maybe the Mormons, who appear to be prosperous people as a group, are able to compartmentalize their lives successfully. Other groups do that, I think. I bet Jehovah's Witnesses buy insurance, like anyone else, despite their apocalyptic beliefs, which, actually, are what makes the Witnesses an interesting group, for anyone who finds religion an intriguing subject (which is probably not the case with most revlefters, but I am just guessing).

Unfortunately, yes, it is accurate. You couldn't make this stuff up... unless you're Joseph Smith, I suppose.

It's a fair question. Mitt Romney is not your average Mormon. He was actually a bishop. So it's fair to assume that he takes this stuff pretty seriously. FWIW, Eisenhower was raised a JW, but obviously he didn't adhere to their tenets as an adult (they are conscientious objectors and do not participate in earthly government). For that matter, Nixon was a Quaker.

It's interesting that you mention Eisenhower; my grandmother was a JW, and they made a lot about the fact that at least one of Eisenhower's close relatives was a Witness. And the fact that Nixon, one of the architects of US aggression against Vietnam, was a Quaker, is really rich.
I know my father was a rebellious young man, because his mother was a JW (i.e., a non-smoking pacifist), and my father smoked, and he was also a Marine in WW2, so his choices went against what his mother tried to teach him.
