Is chivalry (not the chop your head off kind) counter revolutionary? Does paying the bill at a date or pulling out a chair for a woman correspond to the continuation of gender roles? Should i treat a woman as i treat a man and be the biggest douche imaginable?

Instead of being the biggest douche imaginable, why not just try being nice to everyone?

There's nothing wrong with being romantic towards the one you love, as long as you understand that doing nice things doesn't entitle you to control over any aspect of that person's life.

Comrade, paying the bill and pulling out a women's chair on a date are some of the most counter-revolutionary actions one can take. Whenever I am out on a date with my girlfriend I NEVER PAY. Absolutely under no circumstances is that acceptable, do not even get me started on opening car doors. Your on the right road thinking that you should treat a woman as a man, but simply being the "biggest douche imaginable" is not enough. Get creative, chewing with your mouth open, making fun of her, flatulence. Have some fun out there.

I'll hold open a door for anyone, regardless. If a woman wants to see it as chivalry, then so be it. But it isn't the intention, I like being nice....

I fancy this is some attempt at sarcasm, but it is also sexist in suggesting that no women find flatulence funny (oh WHY DO MEN ALWAYS LAUGH AT FART JOKES NO WOMEN DO THAT!1117) and that no women chew with their mouths open, and that all women would be offended by such entirely normal and natural things.

You're fighting the wrong enemy. The true source of reaction is mating behaviour. Never succumb to this evil of evils!

I think this is a valid question, you guys shouldn't mock the OP.
I think in terms of holding a door or something, that's a basic thing to do for anyone, so just do it.

In terms of paying for meals, coffee, tickets etc, this is a bit different. If you pay for your s/o most of the time, and most of the time it is the man paying, something is up. Would you do this for a male friend? I feel as though some women get mad, even if just internally, if the man does not pay. I tend to pay alot, but I'd rather have it be more 50/50.

Chivalry is much more than just paying a dinner bill or pulling up your date's chair. Chivalry is an idea that came from a time when women were seen as weaker than men and needed a strong man to protect them and so forth.

Paying the bill on a date and pulling up her chair isn't chivalry, it's being nice. And instead of being "the biggest douche imaginable," how about you just try to be nice to someone, regardless of that persons gender?

Really? You really want to take this there? Okay, yes it was sarcasm, you are quite perceptive. Instead of just leaving it at a joke, which I am not even claiming was a good joke, you got to call me sexist. I think this is a perfect example of how some of the accusations on revleft are a little ridiculous. Sexist, ageist, etc, etc.

If anything your accusations of sexism is sexism! I never implied that guys or girls do all the things which I listed, that would be silly. But in your response you seem to infer that all men find those things funny. Which is hardly true and a broad sweeping generalization for you to make, I am a man and in no way find flatulence funny.

See how easy it is to spin... absolutely anything? Now stop it.

Be polite, respectful and considerate to all. With your friends, male or female, be sharing and caring. These are the values to nurture and live by.

Now, since perhaps your perception is not what it could be, let me say that what I said was that the "joke" was sexist; not that this joke or its sexist nature was necessarily a reflection of your character or person. It would be folly to fancy that leftists would dwell in an isolated bubble from the rest of the culture, yet... the fact is that these jokes are a reflection of sexist culture. Indeed this perceptions go both-ways with preposterous stereotypes, but this doesn't mean that such jokes are appropriate.

To be honest, I am called a chauvinist, macho and all other kind of words just. Ecause I treat all humans the same. So, I would recommend going along with what the ruling social constructs are if you don't want to be seen as an asshole, discriminatory, sexist etc. As a note: I fucking hate capitalist society. Marx's quote about how the past generations weigh like stone on society, is very near to me.

Perhaps you are not as perceptive as I thought, seeing as how you missed my point. My joke was no more sexist, than your comment that "why do men only laugh at blah blah blah." I never said that men or women specifically do any of the things which I stated; you made the only generalization here by stating that only men find those jokes funny. Which would obviously be as ridiculous as saying no women chew with their mouth open. Either way this conversation is stupid and backs up my point that people take things too seriously on here and are constantly looking for something to get in a huff about. Its like the old ladies who move next to a school only to call the cops with noise complaints everyday during recess.

It appears then that you failed to understand the reason that statement was in quotes and all-caps; it was given as an example of the same type of stereotype you enforce with that sort of joke.

And those things should be taken seriously, they form the popular underpinnings of systems of oppression. Often when people say it's "just a joke", it's because it's something bad and inappropriate.
