I have notice that many people who stand against piracy use the argument "piracy ruins the industry, if companies don't make profit they will stop making games". We are actually seeing the result of piracy today: the big companies have stoped making games for the pc, but as a result we see the rise of independent developers who make better games and sell them cheaper for the pc, therefore invalidating the anti-piracy argument. There are even many developers (indie) who offer their games as freeware, so piracy is just making the big guys collapse, whille giving rise to the indie game movement.

The country where I live (Portugal) is in crisis: the prices and taxes are becoming more expensive, salaries are getting cut, and there are many unemployed people; it is getting so serious that my family no longer has any savings at the end of the month (so we would have to stop eating for some days if we wanted to buy a new washing machine, the old one is broken).
Could I, in this situation, afford buying games?

By the way: I will later write thread on the crisis in Portugal.

the only reason i ever consider buying games is because pirating them is usually a huge hassle.

Since the quality of games collapsed i now resort to piracy that i consider an .iso demo

I bought terrible games in the past and i simply wont tolerate spending money on games i can not try out before i buy.
Far cry 2 being the biggest offender of a game that seemed really fun and in a demo would still be fun but turned into such an incredibly repetitive chore that i still regret spending 50 euro's on when it came out.

Because of FC2 i wont buy farcry 3 until i had an extensive .iso demo trial.

Sometimes finding a good release of a game can be a hassle, to tell the virus-fakeries put up by the media-swine from the real deal.

It is not a hassle to find legit games online: you just have to go to the pirate bay, search for the desired game, order the list by seeders and download the first one that appears.
This method has allways worked for me.
If the problem is not knowing how to download torrents or cracking the game I can explain how:
First of all to download .torrent files all you need is utorrent, the rest is automatic.
To crack the game all you need to do is move the file inside the folder crack/skidrow/Whateverwierdnamethatshowsup to the game folder so that it will replace.

I can make a tutorial thread if you would like.

I am a serial pirate but it doesn't make me any less enthusiastic about looking forward to a future in developing games (as an artist). I rarely buy games as pirating is relatively hassle free, but when I do buy a game, it's usually for somebody else like a brother or a friend, and it's usually a game I've pirated in the past and know they'll enjoy. I do think the workers who create great games should be supported, it's just unfortunate that, with larger games especially, only about 15% of total sales actually get to the developer while 50% goes to the publisher and retailer. Still, large scale piracy or not there will always be those who are willing to make games, and while companies may rise and fall, the IP's remain and decent ones usually get picked up again by other developers.

The Idea that piracy harms the industry through loss of "potential sales" is a line as old as the vinyl record. Interesting note, Seems file sharing is HELPING sales of Anime in Japan.

http://www.japanator.com/does-piracy-help-anime-sales-in-japan-study-says-yes-18459.phtml

and EA was voted worst Comp. in America by enraged gamers
http://consumerist.com/2012/04/congratulations-ea-you-are-the-worst-company-in-america-for-2012.html

These people care only about profit at all cost. Instead of investing their massive amount of cash money dolla dolla bill ya'll on better DRM they pay off lobbying groups and use people with misguided senses of morality and no idea about IP to police the Web, all while shitting on the fans. Because the fans will still buy, they always do.

"Piracy" does decrease profits, in most cases, yeah, but the industry still remains profitable. Indie games are usually crap so I don't really care much about that.

no i understand all of this. i think it's just related to my computer because i always have problems getting the games running and i usually spend a good while searching for fixes to problems before i can get the game to work.

Who cares. We aren't here to make the bourgeoisie wealthier. Slash their games to 30$ and then we'll talk.

I have a few bitgamer invites, you want one? bitgamer usually has only working games and cracks and is kinda strict on ratio.

I usually pirate my movie's and games, for the reason that they make that stuff so expensive. They could halve the prices and still make huge profit. So if they try to steal my money, than why am I not allowed to 'steal' theirs? Besides, I have a history of buying expensive games that won't work whatever I do, so I'm done with that also.

Books usually are much better quality as they do not get away so easily by printing crap.
Academic standards and such still have some meaning as long as its not positive of communism.
