Many things seem in question here, have secular insurgents, Islamic fundamentalists, or some combination of both taken over? And what threat is there to Timbuktu's people and historical heritage? The Mayor sure sounds terrified.

The entire situation is extremely confusing, however it's only further proof that the West's careless actions against Muammar Gadaffi will be their powder keg of destruction which will only end with their being set aflame and leaving the lands that they occupy and exploit in sheer embarrassment.

The National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) is an ethnic nationalist movement, made up of Tuareg fighters drawn from the ranks of the armies of both Qaddafi's Libyan Jamahiriya and, to a lesser extent, the Libyan NTC. It has nothing to offer the working class.
