Except no one listens to the law.

21.

Disregard law, acquire beer.
That's what everybody does.

Prepare to be annoyed; 16 for beer, wine and pre-mixed, 18 for distilled

What the law says
It is against the law:
to be drunk in charge of a child under seven in a public place or on licensed premises
to sell alcohol to someone under 18, anywhere
for an adult to buy or attempt to buy alcohol on behalf of someone under 18
for someone under 18 to buy alcohol, attempt to buy alcohol or to be sold alcohol in any circumstances (unless acting at the request of the police or a weights and measures inspector)
for someone under 18 to drink alcohol in licensed premises, with one exception - 16 and 17 year olds accompanied by an adult can drink but not buy beer, wine and cider with a table meal

It is not illegal for a person under 18 to drink alcohol at home or at a friend’s house. Parents can choose to give young people some of their own alcohol when at home.

The law prohibits anyone of selling alcohol to -16 yo or spirits to -18 yo.

I'm not sure there are laws against the consumption of alcohol for "minors" (ie -16 yo in my country).

For example, I have been drinking wine with my dinner since I was 12-14 (I wasn't allowed to have soft drinks at home) and I don't think my parents were violating any law...

5 years old in your own home.
14 years old in a pub/restaurant with food.
18 years old in a pub/restaurant without food.
21 in a store/off-licence (I think)

By the age of 18 you can buy anything you want at a bar (or a private party) and "folköl" (directly translated "peoples beer"), which has a alcohol percentage of 3,5 in most stores. At 20, you can buy anything you want at "Systembolaget", which is the swedish alcohol monopoly sgtore - only's open at certain times, and closes at 15.00 on saturdays, and is closed on sundays.

I live in the USA, which has some of the most restrictive alcohol laws in the world, besides some middle eastern countries.

I don't think you have to be 21, but if you look under 21 (or even 25) they'll ask for your ID.

Yet technically, in many states, you can drive a car with a weapon in your pocket at 16.

Well, they sure know how to teach kids to be responsible!

It's on a state-by-state basis in the US.

The reason the age is 21 in every state is because the federal government threatened to restrict highway funding in the late 80s if they didn't raise it from 18 to 21.

Same with tobacco (state-by-state). 18 in most states, 19 in Alabama.

Yeah pretty sure there's no more limits on purchasing or drinking alcohol in the UK once you're 18

21 is a ridiculous drinking age tbh

I do think 21 is stupid for a drinking age.

Considering that by the age of 18 you can be drafted to the military and die. But you can't have a beer?

Also, is anyone here from Germany?
I heard a rumour that Germans can drink beer if they can see over the bar

In India, you have to be 21-25 or something.

lol no officially it's 16 (18 for spirits), a lot of European countries are pretty relaxed about not asking for ID though

In some countries there is an age that you reach where you can't drink anymore

I never understood that logic as well.

I mean I can see how alcohol could lead to alcoholism, but joining the military is a far more self-destructive choice.

IIRC there was a recent movement to match drinking ages on base to the host country's laws if they were less strict than the US's

I think it was just on Marine bases but I could be wrong

But it may have fizzled out / been stopped

Really? That sounds awful. So in some countries someone reaches an advanced age, and they suddenly aren't allowed to enjoy alcohol anymore?

Is that in California or in the entire US?

In Scotland they aren't allowed to sell alcohol on Sundays, whilst here in England there's no such restrictions.

In the US specifics like that are by state, county, or even city ordinance. It's just the age of 21 that's dictated by the federal government (and even then only through threats of cutting state highway funding).

I can buy beer at 4AM if I wanted where I live, but in the next county I can't buy shit between midnight and 8AM.

I've heard of wet and dry counties in regards to alcohol, even seen a map of some states with their wet and dry counties.

Yeah, that whole phenomenon of dry counties is just weird. Do you guys have wet/dry counties?

Lynchburg, Tennessee, where the Jack Daniels distillery is located, is in a dry county

We don't, as far as I know, but in Scotland there are a few laws controlling alcohol that don't exist in England and Wales, such as the no selling alcohol on Sundays thing.

Dr. Rosenpenis

funny that in lynchburg youre not allowed to sell alcohol at all but distributing hard liquor all over the world is fine
