Seems like Spanish civil war discussion never involves anything other than Catalonia, at least in leftist circles. While this is understandable, I am interested in the Basque and their part during the war. The most infamous event is Franco's approval of Hitler's bombing of Guernica. Other than the fact that they were heavily oppressed by the regime, I know nothing.
Also, are there any good books on the subject?

I know that Bilbao was a Republican capital and also a fascist prize to be won. I'm pretty sure the Basque were split as to who which side would grant them greater autonomy. I found this when I googled though haven't read it:

Yeah there was fighting between the republican Basque and the separatist Basque.

And, of course, the carlistas were quite strong in the Basque country, especially in Navarre.
