I'm wondering about comedy that is made for a specific demographic, but also mocks that same demographic. for example, Tyler Perry films, or stand up comedians like Chris rock often portray black people in a really negative light, and yet they're hugely popular with the black demographic. also, there's comedians like Jeff Foxworthy, and that ridiculous "git-r-done" guy who mock the white working class (or people who are perceived as "white trash" or "rednecks"), yet you look in the audience and it's full of the exact kind of people they're talking about.
Why do you think this is? can it be boiled down to the simple idea that people just like to laugh at themselves, or is there more to it? also, is this common outside the US?

I think it is...
I've seen some self-referential comedic negative portrayals of Puerto Ricans done by Puerto Ricans. Some are done with political undertones or social criticism though, at least the most recent examples I can remember.

Kind of like it's a lot of fun to laugh at yourself, and if others laugh with you it is fine. However, it isn't fun when others laugh at you. (If that makes sense)

Well I don't know about you guys, but I always think it's funny when people make jokes about Communists.

Stalin reads his report to the Party Congress. Suddenly someone sneezes. "Who sneezed?" Silence. "First row! On your feet! Shoot them!" They are shot, and he asks again, "Who sneezed, Comrades?" No answer. "Second row! On your feet! Shoot them!" They are shot too. "Well, who sneezed? " At last a sobbing cry resounds in the Congress Hall, "It was me! Me!" Stalin says, "Bless you, Comrade!"
