Do yourself a favor and become acquainted with Washington DC Hardcore (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington,_D.C._hardcore).

here is DRI's violent pacification ep which is from their days before they became a metal band. you will probably like it if you like minor threat, though its way thrashier than minor threat.

Although RATM is certainly punk in attitude, they're metal musically.

Rancid (though beware they're homophobes, though this doesn't come throguh in their songs, more in their personal lives!)

The Clash
The King Blues
Dead To Me
Crazy Arm
NOFX
Million Dead

Order Reigns' list is probably more 'classic' punk rock, but I don't really find the likes of Against Me! and Minor Threat all that inspiring. Definitely check out NOFX, they're fucking good!

A very general question, so here is a handy dandy list by sub-genres that not many people seem to have touched on yet (a lot of hardcore). Obviously not the end-all-be-all, though I tried to include a lot of the biggest names in each type, as well as a few personal favorites.

Early 80s Hardcore

Black Flag
Bad Brains
Minor Threat
DYS
Articles of Faith
Jerry's Kids
Poison Idea
Really Red

80s Melodic Hardcore and Youth Crew

Dag Nasty
Embrace
Gorilla Biscuits
Youth of Today
Inside Out (RATM fans, Zach de la Rocha was in this band)
Turning Point
Descendents

80s NYHC (heavier stuff)

Agnostic Front
Cro-Mags
Sick of it All
Warzone
Biohazard

90s Militant Vegan Mosh

108
Unbroken
Trial
Morning Again
Strife
Earth Crisis (most famous vegan band, but I think they suck)

----Hard but not vegan----

Integrity
Madball
Blood For Blood
Anything on Victory Records in the 90s

90s Melodic Hardcore

AFI
Ignite
Silent Majority
Shelter
Avail
Lifetime
88 Fingers Louie
Kid Dynamite
Strike Anywhere

2000s Hardcore Highlights

Stay Gold
Kill Your Idols
Modern Life is War
Propagandhi
Ceremony
Have Heart
Bane
American Nightmare (aka Give Up the Ghost)

Doflamingo
3rd April 2012, 22:41
Emo/Screamo (only a few of these bands are political, but good music nonetheless)

Pg.99
Snowing
Sunny Day Real Estate
American Football
I Would Set Myself on Fire For You
1905
City of Caterpillar
Algernon Cadwallader
The Appleseed Cast
Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate)
The Fire Theft
Knapsack
Look Mexico
Mineral
Pop Unknown
Living & Wrestling
The Reptilian
The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die

There are a lot more that I can't think of at the moment.

I actually like Man is the Bastard a bit more (and Bastard Noise even more). Spazz just was one of the first power violence bands to come to mind.

Ramones.

I'm a huge Ramones fan (minus Johnny's politics, RIP). I'm a huge 'I'm not worthy" fan of Joey, RIP, maybe the greatest front man. I'm also a fan of Dee Dee, RIP, who wrote the vast majority of their songs, even after he left the band. I was lucky to see them in a small acoustic club in my hometown in NY in 1988, right before Dee Dee left.. luckier even to happenstance on someone online from Serbia that had a bootleg audio-video recording of that exact show-- a whole 20 years later-- HA! really, it's a hole in the ground town! no doubt I scapped that 'trade only' up with a lil' bit of cash.. everyone has their price -- sad.. but good for me, yeahhhh!

All that to say that Joey, now 11 years after his death, April 15.. (a couple days away) has a solo album of unrecorded material just released.. called "Rock n' Roll is the Answer". Haven't heard it yet, but... Joey from the grave.. it's gotta be good!

The other punk band worth checking out who are diametrically opposite of the Ramone's sound is the early stuff from 'Bad Religion'.

a long with what everyone else has suggested..

Update: the album is called "Ya Know"? due to be released 5/22... a 7-inch single called "Rock n' Roll is the answer" will be released 4/22.

8th April 2012, 22:05
hey.. also check out Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground, and Iggy and the Stooges--- in the rare case it hasn't been mentioned already...proto punk

o well this is ok I guess

Man Empire! Empire! is one of my favourite bands of all time.
I was going to suggest a few of the local skramz bands, but now I remember why I don't go to their shows. Shits sucks.

I know you said you do not like crass, but I am going to post some anyways. OI! OI! OI!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVkOzFU11iE

Also all these bands are leftists. Some people do not care, but I am someone who loves politics in music. Reagan Youth, Pat the Bunny, Crass and Against Me! were anarchists and I believe D Boon (minutemen) at least, was a commie.
