To be fair, I think he was drafted and I'm not sure you got to say 'no thank you'. He was about 14 and there was a war on, the Nazis were drafting boys into front line regiments as well as anti-aircraft batteries (where I think Ratzinger ended up).

The previous Pope was Polish, not sure too many of them ended up in the Hitler Youth.

So it's the War and these two German soldiers are walking through Poland. Suddenly one of them goes and starts beating up a Polish guy, kicking him when he's on the gound and all that stuff. "Stop!" the other solider says, "imagine if...I dunno, if this guy ends up being Pope one day! Think how terrible you'll feel!"
