On the 30 March Palestinians commemorate Land Day, to mark the appropriation of Palestinian land by Israel. This year Palestinians throughout the Middle East and in the Diaspora will use Land Day to call attention to the imminent dangers facing Jerusalem, by calling for a 'Global March to Jerusalem'.
Palestinians are being supported in this initiative by international civil society organisations and individuals, including Nobel laureates Desmond Tutu and Mairead Maguire.
In the UK this will be marked by a mass protest outside the Israeli Embassy at 5pm supported by Palestine Solidarity Campaign and a number of other organisations.
At the protest outside the Embassy we are calling on Israel to recognise its responsibilities under international law to Jerusalem as a shared city, sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians and end its occupation of East Jerusalem. Protests are expected to take place in 80 cities across the world.
One community under immediate threat is Silwan, in Occupied East Jerusalem, where 1,000 residents are facing eviction, as their homes make way for the proposed "King David's Garden" tourist park. Many have already been served with demolition notices. The UK government condemned the plans in 2011 calling them "provocative and deeply counter- productive".
Hugh Lanning, Chair of Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said
"The future of Jerusalem is vital for the future of a state of Palestine. By operating a system of segregation, apartheid and ethnic cleansing and the expansion of illegal settlements, Israel continues to marginalise Palestinians in Jerusalem.
Both the UN and The International Court of Justice hold that annexation of East Jerusalem, which is part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, is a violation of International law. The systematic demolition of Palestinian homes, building of illegal settlements and existence of the apartheid Wall to shut Palestinian communities out of the main city must cease immediately."
