I don't watch Soviet propaganda movies but I like their cinematography.

My favorite Soviet movie is Tabor ukhodit v nebo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073781/) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073781/)

If you're looking for something leftist/political and don't care if it's from the USSR or not, then I'd suggest Ken Loach's films. He's p. good. Look for The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Land and Freedom

Land and Freedom is so overated. I was so happy when they killed that Irish guy.

I think Tarkovsky, even if he wasn't a communist was a hell of an artist. I think Solaris, get the old version not the new one with Clooney, although I heard that is good as well, is a good place to start. Ivan Rublyov is good as well. There is a great old comedy called 'the irony of fate' (s legkim parom in russian) that russians watch every new years. If you like your war movies there is Come and See (belorussian i think) but watch out its pretty horriffic.

If you want leftist cinema check out Italian neorealism: Rome open city is a classic, as is 'bicycle theives'. Investigation of a citizen above suspicion (1970) is a favourite of mine, its pretty obscure but the acting is superb and its a great mix of realism and surrealism. About the head of the police who decides to commit a murder just to see if he can get away with it.

Happy viewing.

One of my favourite films is Баллада о солдате (Ballad of a Soldier), released in '59 and takes place during WWII on the Eastern Front.

I wouldn't call it progressive or enlightening necessarily but it is a good movie and it's from famous director Grigoriy Chukrai. :) The two leads are played by teen actors with no previous film experience but they are fantastic. The girl was from Ukraine I think.

It's on YouTube in its entirety thanks to Mosfilm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0zr877200s&feature=watch-now-button&wide=1

I also like: Ирония судьбы, или С лёгким паром! (The Irony Of Fate)

That's funny TV movie about ugly concrete buildings in "socialist" states.

Also, one nice music scene:
