it's a pretty arbitrary label that can cover everything from phil spector-esque pop to blue note jazz to funky blues stuff, and it isn't evenfrom northern england, which always confused me.

but it's awesome, for a number of reasons:

1. arguably the first 'dance music', paving the way for disco, house and techno - young mods would take lots of speed and dance all night to obscure records.
2. there's so much of it and northern soul compilations tend to be dirt cheap - you'll pay a few quid for a cd with 20+ tracks, many of which you probably haven't heard before.
3. the music is so upbeat (made for dancing to basically) but the lyrics are usually pretty melancholy, about unrequited love or whatever. it's the perfect bittersweet mix.

lots of stuff like the supremes, early marvin gaye, the marvelettes, etc. comes under the northern soul umbrella, yeah, but it's a lot wider than that.

Ya, Holland-Dozier-Holland were the writing and producing team at Motown in the early 60's. Amazing stuff came out of those sessions.

I'm fan of Northern Soul....

My favorite song is Gloria Jones - Tainted Love :)

It's the ONLY version I will play now. Kontrrazvedka....the Soft Cell version in early 80's irritated me so much, I would switch it off. I was tracking down some Gloria Jones songs.... WoW......right out of the blue....That's how it's done!!!!!.

well philly soul is a kind of northern soul. its like southern soul. folks can group it all together but there was memphis soul, new orleans, deep soul, gospel soul, so on. i guess usually chicago and detroit acts get more attention as far as the north is concerned. maybe rightly so. but philly has a specdial place in my heart. motown as well, actually. especially marvin gaye and smokey robinson. and michael jackson. and jr walker & the all stars. in fact here's a video.
