It was nice to see this in the newspaper becuase I think that the author made it clear that the embargo is bad. Take time and read. What are some of your opinions of it?

Nice to see a different point of view on the 75 people, most people say they were political prisoners. I don’t know who to believe but it just shows you either way the kind of bias in the media.

Let me guess, the three that voted against the UN condemnation were the U$, Britain, and Israel.

That's a common sense view. There is not much I can disagree with, just looking at that article. The fact is even if Cuba was as bad as they are made out to be, explain how sanctions are helpful ? When have they ever succeeded in there goal of getting rid of a government. It is once again an example of ordinary people suffering because of US hypocrisy. They were not political prisoners at all, they were payed to undermine Fidel and it has been confirmed they held discussions with US officials. There intentions were clear but it was actually US, Israel and the Marshall Islands who voted against it, while two others abstained.

The way that the media reports Cuba shows how clearly they are under control of the government they are or perhaps just too lazy to report the actual facts.

Don’t you think Cuba has the right to be before 1959 60% of the infrastructure was owed by Americans. 51% of the sugar cane plantations were owned by the united fruit company and the Rockefellers. The was mass tourism 300,000 Americans a year and corruption it was mob rule, the usa supported this as long as they got there cut. Also you’ve got things like CIA Bay of Pigs invasion. Not saying that you’re uneducated but there are plenty of books and websites on American attitudes towards foreign countries, I advise you to go have a read.

Cuba isn't as hostile to the US, as the US is against Cuba. :cuba:

For one of my economics preps I have to answer:

1.Why might Cuba be described as a command economy?

2.Why does the growth of small businesses and foreign investment threaten the existence of the command economy in Cuba?

3.Discuss whether a lifting of the US trade embargo on Cuba would make it easier or more difficult for te Cuban government to retain a planning model for its economy.

I do have loads of material to use to answer these questions, but I'd really like to hear what you think about the last one.

1) I think it is considered a command economy because money is not the most important factor of transactions in Cuba, it is how the goods are distributed amongst the people.

2) The growth of small business is threatening Cuba because those small business owners are only out to gain profit for themselves without any concern for society. Also, the issue of foreign investments taking place in Cuba are taking away money from society that is valuable for producing those needed goods.

3) This is a very two-sided answer here. If the US embargo were to be lifted, foreign investment would suck the country dry, but not if the government of Cuba were to strictly monitor and control the trade, making sure that no unneccessary transactions were made. And it most likely would be harder at first for the Cuban government to retain a planning model because it will be very busy making sure that foreign capitalists do not try to infiltrate their economy.
