Some media in Iran reported yesterday that the Supreme Council had agreed to increase the minimum wage of USD 320 a month for 2012. Initially, employers didn’t want to increase wages at all but finally they accepted a 10% wage increase. In a meeting, comprised of a panel of workers, government representatives and employers, the workers demanded a 40% increase and the government demanded an 18% wage increase.
The minimum wage published for the upcoming Iranian New Year shows that employers and the government have collaborated against the workers and the 18% wage increase has been the final rate agreed to. However, this does not take into consideration the inflation rate of 15% per year, announced by the Iranian Central Bank and the Statistical Center of Iran. Wages would have had to increase by 21% to 26% to account for this. Only then could it be said that the Iranian regime attempts to serve employees. Even so, Iranian workers haven't had wage increases in the last few decades. Indeed, even the 40% wage increase put forward by the Great Center of Trade Unions in the meeting was inadequate. Can this Center answer why, even with the 40% increase, the minimum wage would still be less than the minimum wage in Turkey and Morocco?
One of the main problems of Iranian workers is that they don’t have powerful independent unions. This is because the Iranian regime, both reformist and conservative factions, has always oppressed workers’ rights. If Iranian workers had true organization, then they could get adequate wages for a family of 5 to cover the cost of daily living. The best way for workers to achieve strong protection is through unity and numbers in union organization.
The workers experience over last three decades has proved that without struggle against the Iranian regime it is impossible to achieve their rights.
The Fadaian (Aghaliyat) Organization demands a minimum wage that is adequate for a family of five. In addition, we demand the right of freedom of assembly, the right to organize unions and the right to strike.
