I need some advice for getting a part time job. I have pretty good GCSE results but no experience at all. I tried applying for McDonald's and KFC a while back but I had no luck.

It's your resume, if you didn't get into McD's or KFC then it has to be your resume.

I didn't even have to send in a CV/resume to McD's or KFC, it was just an online application. I have a funny feeling it was because of huge job competition.

Do an online application for a place, then physically go in and talk to the manager, introduce yourself, make sure they know you're looking for work, tell them you did the online application, maybe give them a resume anyways etc.

In my experience, hiring managers disregard online applications of people who don't physically show up to ask about work. For jobs like McDonalds and random retail jobs, anyways. Emailing your resume to a company that only wants a resume and tells you do not contact them is totally different.

Which is bullshit but it happens

But the point is you want to make sure they can put a face to the electronic application and think "hey this person came in to talk to me they must really want a job"

Play their little game

Bug your friends, ask them if the jobs they work at are hiring. When I ran restaurants I almost always hired friends of friends. Also, it's a numbers game. Your chances increase with the number of apps you fill out. Also when applying at the job site have all the pertinent info with you. Several copies of your resume', references, dates and addresses of your last three employers. And always do a little research into a particular company that you really want to work for or are going to interview for. Good luck!:thumbup1:

It doesn't have to be your resume, I applied once at McDonalds and they didn't hire me. I applied again three months later with the exact same resume and they called me the next day. So you might want to rewrite your resume if it actually is crap(remember that if you're young it's okay for you to not have a lot on your resume) but also just keep putting them everywhere over and over again and eventually you're bound to at least get a really shitty McDonald's job.

The best thing to do is to just get a phone book and just send out hundreds of CVs with a cover letter to all of the local businesses. Also pop down to the jobcentre and have a look at their machines but those jobs are usually pretty shit.

like jbeard said, friends of friends are your best bet.

The other thing to do is find an industry you want to be in like transport or food or whatever, and try to learn a bit more about it. This helps you in the long run because if you give a shit about the field you can actually justify spending a majority of your waking hours there. Also be willing to move

I know you're a teenager. A pretty good job that doesn't require any experience is a kitchen porter. Just apply to every restaurant asking if they need a kitchen porter. It's seriously easy work, if boring. Plus, you might be able to make more than than minimum wage because your wages will be supplemented with tips. And depending on where you work, your tips might be better than your wages. I wouldn't bother with bit super markets or chain stores.

Is there an easy way to get a job that doesn't involve going to hundreds of places and handing your cv in?

This isn't the 70s anymore. The only way to get job these days is to play the game and that means handing in hundreds of CVs. I was on the dole a few years ago and I must have sent out like 300-400 CVs and I only got 2 replies back. One was the "oh, we're not interested at the moment..." pish and the other was the job I had taken. And I have two degrees and a diploma.

I'm tempted to just lie on my CV about my experience...

Apply. Call them back a week later asking them about the application. Ask them like "oh hey my name is nox i was wondering what the status on my application was" and do that every day until you get a no or an interview

sort of a bad idea.

i mean i know folks who ran a business and so they always just covered for me. and i lied in the past about having industrial experience to get a job. never put that down on paper though.

Yeah man, I know it's illegal (I think it is anyway) but most employers don't check and even if they did, there's no real way for them to prove I didn't work there, especially if I put down some random small business like a corner shop or something.

ahhh yeah all they have to do is call up and as soon as they do, you're basically fucked.

I mean I lie every so often when it comes to why I no longer work at the places I've worked at, but that's because in the US, employers can't ask anything other than 'did this person work here'

Yeah, which is why I'm going to put jobs that I can either cover for, or they won't be able to call up.
