View Full Version : Martial Arts (Hierarchy and Authority- Contradictive to Anarchism?)

Martial arts sometimes implement hierarchy when it comes to belt progression and advancing in rank. Also, there are times in the gym/dojo where the instructor/'master' will take somewhat of an authoritarian stance in order to convey a message.

My question is, are these hierarchical/authoritarian relationships justifiable? Martial arts are obviously completely voluntary but some stuff does seem to kind of contradict certain aspects of Anarchism.

Maybe I'm just over-thinking though.

Is a parent ordering his child to move out of incoming traffic unjustifiably authoritarian for you? If Anarchism is some kind of life-philosophy for you which justifies telling your teachers to fuck off because you don't like homework, well, you need to re-think your politics.

I agree.

The absurd, absolutist, and dogmatic moralism that permeates the philosophies of so many anarchists is one of the primary reasons I no longer identify as one. I'm an anarchist in the sense that I reject the use of authority and coercion against the proletariat because it's impractical, not because of some quasi-religious moral opposition I feel in response to the use of authority and coercion in general. If you're concerned that some recreational activity may be "contrary" to "anarchist principles", you need to re-think what it means to be an anarchist.

Anarchism has no problem with "earned" or natural authority, it has a problem with demanded authority and refusal to share skills.
My teachers and sensei deserve their authority on their superior knowledge and what they are willing to transfer of that to me, but that is something completely than a cop, politician or rich fuck demanding I crawl for him.

Absolutely not. I don't think that all forms of authority are unjust. Some are necessary and some are undeniable but some Anarchists tend to take things too far and be COMPLETELY opposed to such things. I think the line's just a little blurred when it comes to certain things and some let their political beliefs outweigh other things such as hobbies.

I agree with e.g. Bob Black that we should abolish childhood. But not because of that reason...
