Such an enlightening and relevant post.
Besides, here's a rather good documentary about the song:

It's in six parts, all on youtube.

Filthy "revisionists". If Glorious Comrade Stalin didn't die he would show them!!!!!
I've always liked the French original over the Russian version. L'Internationale Sera le genre humain!

The French version is so much better.
The Internationale should be the anthem of every socialist nation, but I understand why Stalin changed it. Nevertheless, it is such a beautiful and moving song.

What are the salient differences between the French and the Russian versions?

The lyrics were changed to reflect violent revolution in Russia, changed to present tense - and, of course, to sound good when sung.

The occasion in the video was the opening (in one of the Kremlin Palaces) of a Congress of the Leninist All-Union Komsomol (Communist Union of Youth). Yeah, I got chills too, watching the youtube video and listening to the singing. Takes me back to undergraduate university courses in Russian language, literature and civilization, when I went to the uni library, got out the appropriate volume of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia and memorized the words of the Internationale, so I could sing them in Russian. I really miss the old USSR; those were the days! Soviet power really was a check on the imperialists!
