View Full Version : Underground and Mainstream?

What is this obsession with "underground" and "mainstream". It seems the teenagers seem to confine themselves to either of the two. The teenagers think listening to music no one else listen's to is "rebellious". What is the point of this? (I listen to music no one listens to as well, but I don't go out of my way to do it or criticize those who listen to the bands/music they like).

For example, I am a fan of Andrea Bochelli (that nigga has some illass freestyles) do you think it is wrong for me to appreciate his music because he is "famous" ? Why or why not? (I mostly listen to metal by the way)

It seems the teenagers....
Remember 11 January 1989. Sounds like one of those "In the old day..." topics....
Okay for some old fuck like RAF. For you, though, maybe not

that nigga has some illass freestyles
I hope you be black, my man.

As for the real question at hand, it seems that we like to classify things, which naturally suits the human animal. Anyway, every time I hear "underground" in the musical pretext anymore, my blood runs cold. Back in the old days, when such a thing as real music existed in multitudes, the "underground" wasn't really understood by anybody. Now, its cool and hip to be "underground,"

to be known, but unknown. See the paradox? Its how our western media turns words into whatever they want for a quick buck. and "underground" has just been applied to music in the last 20 or 30 years, I reckon.
Trying to pair up some money-making huxsters with the likes of Abbie Hoffman or real activists does nothing but destroy the latter's image.

The only racist comment I see in this thread is yours... I don't care if he's a cracker or a nigger and hetero or a fag or whatever...

I think the two terms are there for a reason; underground represents an artform that is on the verge of breaking out of 'commercial contempt' whereas mainstream means that something has been portrayed in medias res to the point where it is no longer unknown by the general populace.

Drum n Bass has been around for the better part of a decade, perhaps even longer, but in most cities it isn't definitive of club culture as, say, progressive house or techno. It's no longer underground because people have heard it played everywhere except out of their own asses (ESPN commercials, radio jingles, fuck it, even my Dad knows what DnB is), but has yet to reach that 'mainstream' hell where MTV broadcasts all day and all night and VJ Sara is my love slave.

At least, that's how I see it.

Are you serious about that? I am not allowed to type nigger? I think that is ridiculous... Sure, I wouldn't just call anyone a nigger, cause in some cases that can be considered offensive, but making nigger such a taboo word just makes matters worse, i.e. the 'forbidden' word a lot more powerful. I won't call my homosexual friend a stupid faggot and wouldn't call my black friends (I don't have any, actually... Well, at least none in real life except for one in the US who I haven't seen in years) stupid nigger... But I sure as hell won't let any stupid [person] tell me which words I am allowed to utter and which I not... ;)

Maybe you were just kidding... If that's not the case then I guess I strongly disagree. :P

when you perpetuate words with hateful meanings, you are only continuing the hatred itself-voluntarilly or not

Quintin Tarantino uses nigger in his films, only person i know who has a real problem with it is Spike Lee. QT grew up in a black neighborhood went to an all black school and his mom's boyfriends and people around his house growing up were black. No one seems to really complain much about him using it not even black actors he works with.

Richard Pryor used nigger in his comedy routine over the past few decades. I dont see people going after him.

Richard Pryor, bless his coked-up soul (what a great guy), was black.
Not to start fucking things up here, but being black and saying it and being white and saying it are totally different, I think.

Yeah, and I think to an extent that is racism on your part, easy as that. Sure, I do agree that in the case of a black guy saying nigger he is most likely not being racist towards blacks, whereas it can be the case with whites/other non-blacks saying it, but if a character in a book or a movie or a poem or a short story that I made says it, I really don't see what the fucking big deal is - same basically goes with Tarantino's movies... What the fuck, we can have serial killers torturing their victims (in a movie/book etc), but we cannot allow those sickos to utter the 'n'-word? That must be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard...

For the record in case you missed that: I don't just call blacks niggers and don't call women *****es and don't call homosexuals (gay was an insult, then turned normal, then got turned back into an insult) faggots, but I don't see anything wrong with using those words (i.e. nigger, *****, faggot) in a perfectly rational conversation. It should be the CONTEXT that is important, not just the fucking word itself... <_<

... Lately I tend to get irritated quite easily, so don't take any of this personal or anything. ;)

I personally find that Tarantino used the word excessively in Pulp Fiction. I can't actually recall how often it was used in his other movies. Obviously if you have a racist character then it makes some sense to use it otherwise it comes off like a little kid that just learned some curse words and likes to say them to see how other people react.
