You're really suggesting the police respond to a protective dog by beating it down?
Are you a sociopath? Or have you just never been around large, protective dogs?

Well, a dog can be quite a threat --- certainly when you're not expecting it.
Over 6000 admissions in UK hospitals every year... Three times more than people getting hurt by cows, horses, ...

Does it matter? the dog would have been put down after doing this anyway
They act like the dog was a big threat
Umm..
Five policemen were in hospital last night after being savaged by the animal, and were said to have ‘life-changing’ wounds as serious as those seen after a shootout.
One officer had his arm broken between the animal’s jaws, while others had chunks of flesh torn from their legs and arms. Some will require plastic surgery, and one could lose several fingers.

Not that I'm going to lose sleep over the police getting injured, ACAB and all that, but still.. of all the things to criticise the police over this isn't really one of them

From what I've gathered on my last trip to the dog track is that this "alleged canine" did indeed have a file on him going way back. My buddy pedro is an expert in all things criminaly canine. So I'm pretty sure this info is good. Pretty sure.

5 cops got
hospitalisedon sounds really bad don't it
But seriously any dog that attacks people like that should be put down and as far as i am concerned the owners should face a few months of jail time for their failure to properly raise their dogs.
Dogs only get dangerous when their owners fuck up and to me that is no different from driving while drunk namely being willfully negligent and not giving a fuck about the safety of others (or the dogs well being for that matter)
And a little admission from me is that i had to laugh at the cops jumping over fences to get away guess its not that easy when you have to beat up something that bites back.

Dogs love'em or hate'em? Here they just eat'em. Usually a birthday treat for kids((boys). Although I have always insisted on the children being treated equally. Wifey agrees. Wifey is such a salt she took my dog to a labourer in the next farm and cooked it for his birthday He had been recently widowed. I don't know if he was trying to placate me, he offered me some rum from his flask and pronounced "The meat tasted just like the best beef"..."so tasty". On the way home No2 daughter said"Cheer up Daddy----Mummy will get you another one!" --------------"Just in time for your bloody birthday!!"

A "properly raised" dog will still defend pack-mates.
Even the most docile, well-socialized and trained dogs will respond to an attack with force. They're trying to protect their own. In this case, the guy being arrested.
One of my dogs (RIP) was medium-sized, about 50 pounds, german shepherd mixed with a border collie. Docile as can be. She'd never lay a tooth on anybody, anywhere out of aggression and would walk up to strangers and strange dogs all over the place to try and play. One night I'm walking her and some guy turns the corner and starts running in my direction. She immediately lowered herself, bared her teeth, raised her hackles, and let out the most ferocious growl and bark I've ever heard come from a canine. The guy was just trying to get an evening jog in, but everything she got out of the situation was "unfamiliar monkey approaching at a high rate of speed during predatory hours". She was well trained, and I was able to get her attention by putting my arm around her neck and grabbing her chest, told her to calm down and sit firmly, and she did. As he got closer she wagged her tail and let him pass by unscathed.
Point is, a dog will defend its pack-mates no matter how well trained it is. The guy was being arrested and couldn't do anything about his dog.
The police should have been trained on how to deal with aggressive dogs. Something like pepper spray is even acceptable if the dog begins to attack. Just don't kill the poor thing :cursing:

Apparently this dog has a long record of attacking people and animals.
So to me this reads like a neglected dog and a very irresponsible owner.
The dog is thought to have been responsible for another attack on a passer-by last year. It is thought that officers were sent to investigate reports that the same dog had bitten a man in April last year but no arrests were made.
Newham council said it launched an investigation last year after a complaint that a dog had bitten a cyclist in the square in April 2011. Animal welfare officers visited the property on 6 May, but there was no response and no further action was taken after discussions with police.
One neighbour, David Clarke, said he had previously reported the dog to the council for attacking another dog. The 72-year-old said: "That was a dangerous dog. I informed the council about it, which is why the fencing was put up. It has already attacked another dog. The owner never had it on a muzzle or a lead, but he did after the previous attack. He didn't take it out a lot.

Looked like 2 animals fighting to the death to me.....still glad it was the dog.I repeat, bet the neighbours are glad the dog is dead. They must be sighing with relief. I never trust a dog..a dog owner, or dog breeder. I have never been bitten . My sister regularly got dogs from Rescue centres. I warned her one of the dogs was mad, they took it on Holiday with them to the Lake District and it jumped over a cliff. "See M A D !!" 600ft...mad...mad...mad!" My brother says the reason she has not spoken to me in 27yrs is because I was proved right. I told him if I was her dog I would have jumped over the bloody cliff.
In Britain no sensible discussion can ever take place on the subject of dogs.
I do recall a documentary 70's, serious, a child, young girl 8/9yrs chained to park railings. People walked past, some averted their gaze, one pulled her own daughter away and sped off. In the same spot they chained a dog....within minutes people were comforting the dog and dark mutterings heard about irresponsible dog owners. That just about bloody sums us up. Bonkers.

I've seen police use those taser bullet things on dogs, wouldn't that be a little more convenient than killing the damn thing?
Anyway, it was quite funny seeing the fed's arm get eaten... I look forward to all the jokes about that yet to come.

This takes me back to when we had a rottweiler some years back... died at 5 from cancer. He wasn't any more or less aggressive than your average dog I'd say, but obviously he would do something if someone just bust into the house out of nowhere. It's like rubbing someone's knob then smacking it for standing up. How can the police NOT prepare for a dog attack when they're raiding a house? If you're raiding someone's house they must be pretty dangerous, and a vicious dog would probably be one of the first thoughts on my mind.

That is ... a strangely accurate metaphor for the situation
Sorry about the dog, though :( The one I mentioned was hit by a car six months later, my ex-girlfriend and I were visiting her parents and went to a movie, left her (the dog) at her parent's house. Her dad went outside and left the door open when we were gone...

Yeah dogs are crazy around cars, it's like they shut off around them or something. I always got paranoid about that sort of thing. Strange how close you can get to an animal though, I was a bucket of tears when it happened... my dad was taking him to get put down because he was in pain, but he died in his arms on the way there. It'd feel weird getting another dog, kinda like cheating on a girlfriend.

Are you a sociopath? Or have you just never been around large, protective dogs?
How would you suggest acting in a situation where someone is being badly bitten? or you yourself are being badly bitten?
My response would be to try to kill the dog as quickly as possible, as would anyone who isn't an animal rights nutcase. humans>other animals
And ya i have been around large dogs all lovely creatures.
