I hate to be the cynical bastard here, but am I the only one who is looking at this and thinking it may become yet another reason for American imperialism to stage a "humanitarian" intervention? I mean, not only the ending slavery thing, but also going after a branch of al-Qa'ida in Mauritania.

Lesser of two evils rule should be applied here. Fuck slavery. Break it by force if necessary

Depressingly, no. I can't be bothered to take the piss out of these posts anymore. You loons have worn me down.

Can Americans make it worse, really? And what sort of known resources that Mauritania have, anyways? I don't think it's that valuable for the US to even consider sticking their noses in.

i think some drone strikes or a quick raid would probably be more likely than a full on 'intervention,' especially the way things are brewing with iran. aqap and al-shabab are also considered more pressing concerns on the terror front.

So what about domestic slavery elsewhere? Workers' slavery in the UAE for instance? Or sexual exploitation and human trafficking?
Whatever the backwardness of Mauritania's slavery, I think there is still a lot of work to do what lack of physical liberty is concerned in the entire world.

An intervention would just cause more problems and solve none. Anyway, we all know interventions aren't undertaken on humanitarian grounds. I know it's extremely unlikely but I'm just making a general statement.

You do have to question the timing of the recent coverage of this, and mention of a supposed "al-Qaida branch" in the "lawless desert" along with it, coming along side all the other not-so-subtle calls for imperialist "humanitarian intervention" in Africa -- just after the U.S. military starts setting up shop in the middle of the continent.
Especially since this is hardly something that has been hidden from the world. Our old group wrote about it back in 2004, and of course it was known to whoever wanted to know for a long time before that.
