Any comrades have a critique of it? I've been looking for a basic but thorough history of the region and this seems to be a popular one. However it's got shit reviews on Amazon, and I can't decide if that's legit criticism or nationalist reactionary fury.

I'd rather not have my first heavy duty reading experience on the topic be pro-West or heavily biased in some other way (I've heard Glenny wrote something else that was really biased), so if anyone's checked this out, opinions would be appreciated. It's a giant book and I don't want to waste my time if it's not decent.

Edit: The full title is "The Balkans: Nationalism, War & the Great Powers, 1804-1999."

Its not a bad book, but there are much better histories of the Balkans. For a book written by a journalist, it wasn't a very engaging read

Mark Mazower's small history book on the Balkans is excellent

As for a more detailed book, i quite liked Dennis P. Hupchick's The Balkans from Constantinople to Communism
