Hello, was wondering if anyone has any cool middle eastern/arab world music they'd like to share. I'm looking for all kinds, rap, classical, etc
Specifically I'm looking for music in Arabic but anything from the area will do, thanks!

Ney music is nice if you're after a natural alternative to sleeping pills or want to get closer to the creator. (The 'ney' is a kind of flute which is played in the middle east and in some countries of the former Ottoman empire.)

This seems to offer a good introduction to Arab music

Egypt seems to be a center of contemporary Middle Eastern music (as well as culture in general). Unfortunately I'm not very knowledgeable about artists.

I think you might enjoy the Lebanese singer Fairuz, she is one of the most famous voices in the Arab World now, she started with classical songs with her husband and his brother (the Rahbani brothers), then later her son (Ziad Rahbani) started a fusion of her songs with jazz and other western musical genres. I think you might enjoy her early work as well as her new stuff.

Can't beat it when some of the best Arabic artists team up with Quincy Jones...

UyZ2K8tEwC0

(some of the individual efforts of those artists are really good stuff...especially Rim Banna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5xqF_u71Ho) and Souad Massi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3i4nqrEsNc) IMO)

...except if you put on some Oum Kalthoum, that is :) Listen to her and you're listening to the very voice of Egypt.

For one of Algeria's most popular check out Cheb Khaled:

Natacha Atlas sings much of her music in Arabic and I second that recommendation:

Celestial Danses

This CD is a part of my collection, and is dedicated to the work of the Iranian Ostad Elahi (1895-1974), who was an accomplished player of the tanbur lute. It incorporates both chants and instrumentals, and some of the recordings date back to the 1930s.

I have played it many times, and wouldn't be without. Well worth checking out.

Good luck! :)

Song by Marcel Khaliefeh dedicated for the children in the South of Lebanon, about a child flying a kite when he sees an Israeli Fighter Jet in the sky and it bombs the area (I don't want to start a political debate on a non-political page) so if someone thinks this is inappropriate to be posted here, I apologize and you can remove it. (I've been away from revleft for some 10 years and not up with new rules of posting)
