Gabi Zimmer will succeed Lothar Bisky who has resigned for health reasons.

MEPs from the European United Left-Nordic Green Left group today elected Gabi Zimmer as their leader.

Zimmer, a member of Germany's Die Linke (Left) party, will succeed Lothar Bisky, also German, who resigned as group leader last week for health reasons. Bisky has been [co-]chairman of Die Linke since 2007.

Zimmer was unopposed and was elected unanimously.

She said after being elected that she would campaign for referenda on the fiscal compact treaty which requires participating countries to implement tough economic discipline.

Zimmer, who is from Berlin, has been a MEP since 2004.

The EUL-NGL group has 34 MEPs, making it the sixth largest group. It has the same number of members as the Eurosceptic Europe of Freedom and Democracy group.

She said after being elected that she would campaign for referenda on the fiscal compact treaty which requires participating countries to implement tough economic discipline.

So, where does she stand in this? What kind of alternative is she proposing?

Also, I'm not a huge fan on referenda, especially given the recent results in, for example, Ireland. There is little democratic about them.
