Fuck the police.

I was doing some major hanging with friends late into the morning. I stepped out to my car at 3:30am and drove it down the street for a brief errand. Once the partying has all stopped and we all decided to go home (this is around 6:00am), we step aside. I start walking up to my car. Where is it?
I walk down the street. What the fuck?
My heart immediately sank.

I hate talking to cops, but I had to call 911 to report my car was stolen. This was fucked up. After telling the address, description, and everything, I get a phone call a few minute later. The 911 dispatch is telling me my car was fucking towed by the city because my registration was expired.

Wait a second... That little sticker at the top-right-hand corner of your license plate, THAT THING?! A cop managed to actually drive by, and somehow with precise vision, saw the 2 square-inch sticker was expired by a few weeks? Instead of writing a ticket, they get the city to fucking tow it away and impound it!

The dispatcher said if I had been parked on the drive-way (deemed "private property") and not the street (deemed "public space"), it couldnt have been towed.

Now, I got a ride to the impound, only find out just the towing itself will cost me $145. A $25 charge will be tacked on for everyday.

Now I'm here at my apartment, about to walk to the DMV 6 miles away (12 miles total, uggghhh) because all my friends are either working or at school. The DMV closes at 4 and everyone I talked to gets out of work at 5, 6, 7...

Now I have to walk 12 miles, then go straight into work after that for an 8 hour shift. There's no way I could get back to the impound, so i'm already looking at a bare minimum of $170

all because of a fucking sticker.

Wow, do they really circle around the bloc like that? Looking for cars to tow?

That fucking sucks.

Uh, they have to give you notice if I remember correctly. (I know they can do anything they want) but I don't think they can just cruise around all day finding vehicles with expired reg's and towing them on the spot. The city's 'parking enforcement' or whatever the fuck it's called will usually put a notice on your car. That has been my experience on several occasions.

Yeah. I was told by two other people that when they had expired registrations, they were simply given tickets... I would gladly take a ticket over all this bullshit going back-and-forth to places without a car. My feet are killing me after that walk, and I still have work later tonight.

I definitely will have some questions for them in the morning when I go pick it up.

I've had to do something similar. I went to my friend's apartment a few years ago, and the guests had to park in a designated set of about 10 spots on the back row of the parking area in addition to having a "Guest" hang-tag on your mirror. I put the hang-tag, but literally every guest spot was taken. So I parked one fucking spot over. Literally the next parking spot.

The next day I go out to my car and it's GONE. My friend tells me they probably towed it, and that they've missed his hang-tag for his normal spot and towed his car before.

$110 to get that shit out of a private impound lot, just to park it ONE SPOT TO THE LEFT.

That night we saw the company towing 3 different cars around 1 AM and threw a bunch of shit at them.

i was late by 15 minutes on a meter in san francisco and some meter worker decided to double dip and get me for expired tags and being late on the meter. over $250 for that shit. though, not as bad as being towed. fuck that.

$260 later...
I finally have my car back.

Dear officer "Oliver" with the officer number 2046,

It is a car jacking, except they have the courts and guns behind them. That car rightfully belongs to me. I bought it, I put gas and money into it, I drive it. All of a sudden they can take it because I'm late on putting a stupid sticker on my license plate, and then make me pay $260 to get it back? That's a ransom right there.

That absolutely constitutes robbery. Can't come up with the $50 or $70 bucks for registration? How's about $260 then! Explaine that fucked up knowledge?!

Glad to hear you didn't lose your ride.

Assholes.
